No matter what religion you follow, or even if you don't follow any, real estate investors, developers, brokers, and contractors may have reasons to go to church. They often own additional properties, or have plenty of land surrounding the actual gathering point. Some own single-family homes which they rent to employees and helpers at greatly reduced rates. For them, it's not always about cash flow. You never know how you might be able to help meet demands for affordable housing and benefit from it. The only successful tool I have seen churches use to circumvent local zoning, and landmark laws is to employee freedom of religion to assert their rights to carry out their mission while thwarting NIMBY friction. “Churches sometimes have it in their mind that they can build new space for themselves, build affordable housing and generate income,” said Mark Elsdon, cofounder of RootedGood, a Wisconsin-based organization that helps faith-based groups rethink their real estate resources. “Very often, you’re lucky to get one of those. Two would be a huge win. But all three?” “What’s holding up the church-to-housing pipeline? Bluntly, even God’s house has to abide by humankind’s zoning laws. https://lnkd.in/gXZJGhqc A little bit about where I'm from, born and reared. This church, Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church is my home church. The church I grew up in and followed the lead of my sister to join the Usher Board at around 8 or 9. I got to wear white gloves and wear a badge shaped like a ⭐ that said, "Usher". The church is celebrating the dedication of its new building, recently completed. The church burned down a few years ago, and is now seeing new life on the same grounds. Neighborhoods like mine hold awesome historical value that is well known, but not often recognized as great in VALUE to invest in purchasing land or property, perhaps due to the narrative of "trouble" spots taking precedent over what value might mean, whereas areas of crime ( which exists in any neighborhood) and older homes that are mostly well kept with great home owners making up the community. "Outside" investors come in and purchase blighted or distressed homes in the community, rehab them and resale at price points that don't always endear or can be accepted as a good investment in the community as a whole. What drives the price point in neighborhoods like this with new builds and investors creating price gaffes that cannot make sense to locals who might otherwise invest in their own older neighborhoods where value is seen differently? My wife and I are closing on a house next week. Our current home is very close to being sold. Moving is an interesting thing. There is so much to reflect on. We've had three of our four kids in this little house. We know the neighbors. We've tilled the soil, planted things, ate fruits from the trees on the property. We've painted the walls, decorated, repaired. We've hosted reading groups, after-Mass brunches, birthdays and Christmases in this little house. We've outgrown it physically, yes. But we find ourselves attached to it. We should deeply love our home, our soil, our neighborhood, our town. We are only moving four minutes down the road, so we are hardly uprooting. But we should think deeply about this. People are from a place; they should be rooted. We should be very hesitant to uproot and move around the country and the world. We are not meant to live like that. We are meant to be where we are from, to stay there, to intentionally become more and more rooted in a community. It's hard to renew a society, a culture, when people don't put down roots. Of course people have good reasons to move (duty like military service, as well as when people from two different places get married). But uprooting should be the exception, not the norm. #home #local #community

I'm a big advocate for building new housing. I've developed housing on church land in the past and I have a number of projects in the pipeline currently. Some of the churches in our RootedGood Good Futures Accelerator are developing affordable housing as a way to serve their community. BUT developing housing on church land is not a magic solution. It is far from easy. It isn't always the best idea for use of church land. And most of all, it is not the responsibility of churches alone to solve our nation's affordable housing crisis.
