If we are really paying attention, we shouldn't be surprised by this data in the new Chief Executive Women (CEW) report that shows women in leadership at ASX300 companies is going backwards. The new Lean In / McKinsey & Company report also shows a stark lack of progress in key areas. We have to start having a different conversation about why we are still here with a dearth of women in leadership, and the forces that are stopping progression. When we look past the data to the lived experience of women, it becomes very clear why and how women are either being held back by the systems, structures and biases at play, or why they are choosing not progress due to the expectations of inauthentic leadership and systems where they cannot succeed. We need to get under the surface of these issues and have deeper conversations that will effect change. And it's imperative that we have the voices of men in the middle of organisations in the discussion and with the tools to effect change, as they are the ones making decisions every day that impact the future leadership makeup of our organisations. This is why I wrote the new Women Rising book, and I urge everyone to read it to better understand the paradoxes of power that are halting women's progress and what we can collectively do about it. womenrisingbook.com
The latest gender diversity statistics announced by Chief Executive Women (CEW) yesterday are concerning. CEW has found only 25 of ASX300 CEOs are women and half of these companies have no women in CEO pathway roles as of 1 July.
Our experience running leadership development programs supports ANZ’s Katherine Bray comment “it doesn’t just happen because we want it to happen. It takes rigorous management and targets.”
Over the past 15 years McCarthy Mentoring has delivered women’s leadership programs with Qantas, Stockland, Snowy Hydro and Council of Museum Directors with strong results including an average of 49% promoted or increased responsibilities within the first 12 months.
Like safety or cyber security, gender equity in our companies requires clear goals, targets, executive sponsorship and accountability to successfully accelerate and progress talented women. These initiatives must then sit within a broader commitment to ensure culture, structure and systems enable and foster diversity across all levels and roles.
When you work on reports like the Chief Executive Women (CEW) 2024 Senior Executive Census, it's quite a marvel to see how each journalist will interpret the data and bring it to life. I was particularly chuffed to see Sally Patten engage in the CEO pipeline statistics.
70 per cent of the women in ASX300 executive leadership teams are not in ~traditional pipeline roles~, meaning despite their talent and hard work, they are unlikely to be considered for promotion to CEO. Meaning any improvement to the '91% of CEOs are men' stat is not happening any time soon.
Pervasive gender norms in the workplace aren't just a problem for corporate executives. In a dual-income economy, they're not serving the millions of families juggling work and shared care responsibilities. We need to adapt.
Change is very possible, and it should start from the top. 40:40:20 gender targets work, yet only 40% of ASX300 companies have them. That's a glaringly obvious starting point. So, if you work somewhere that hasn't set one (or hasn't achieved it) I dare you to email your manager about it.
A big big thanks to everyone who covered the census this year. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/geybFkCR
