Big takeaway from the NC Coastal Resources Commission Science Panel's 2024 Sea Level Rise Science Update: "[The report]...emphasized that tide gauge observations, and modeling for all scenarios, are nearly the same out to 2050, indicating we are solidly on track for at least one foot of sea level rise by 2050 (just 25 years from now), relative to the year 2000. To prepare for this, requires community involvement, planning, mitigation, and adaptation to start now." Although seas will continue to rise even after the year 2100, fortunately the High and Intermediate-High projections are judged to be less likely than previously thought. Our coastal, CAMA land use plans and the built environment must prepare for the changing conditions that we will experience in the future. Communities who plan now will prosper in the future. #planning #resiliency #InspirePlacemaking #CAMA Article at: https://lnkd.in/ecQX77pS Report at: https://lnkd.in/euRAUqfe

As stewards of their territory, the Gitga’at blend traditional knowledge with Western science to protect humpback whales from marine shipping along the Pacific coast. 🐋 Safer shipping practices are being advocated for through efforts like the Ships Whales and Acoustics in Gitga’at territory (SWAG) project, which aims to reduce the impact of commercial shipping on important habitats by requesting slowdowns and promoting different shipping routes. Water is the very foundation for the floating nature of Moss Maritime's business. Admittedly, we mainly interact with salt water, but nevertheless we annually mark World Water Day at our office. This year’s theme of “Water for Peace” makes us contemplate the important role water plays in the world. Did you for instance know that more than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national boarders? #WWD #mossmaritime

Congratulations to the Taiwan Tuna Longline Association Pacific Ocean Tuna FIP for advancing from prospective to comprehensive on FisheryProgress! This FIP's end goal is to achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, while addressing both environmental and social aspects of the fishery. This FIP is one of three partners FishChoice and Ocean Outcomes are working with on a pilot project to better integrate fishers in implementing the Human Rights and Social Responsibility Policy. Part of the policy involves fisher awareness of rights, and this FIP will test new ways to make sure that this process is robust and inclusive. This involves making sure that FIP managers know fishers’ languages, preferred modes of communication, home communities, and levels of access to WiFi on fishing vessels. All of this is to ensure a better work environment, and better fishery overall.

🤝 In mid-June, #Norway, the #UK, and the #FaroeIslands agreed on a three-year deal to manage, distribute, and access #fish #mackerel in each other's waters. 🐟 Now, the Minister of #Fisheries of the Faroe Islands, Dennis Holm, has submitted a proposal for amendments to this mackerel regulation in British and Norwegian waters for review. 🚢 The agreement stipulates that up to 12 Faroese #vessels can fish for mackerel in Norwegian #waters at any given time. For this reason, the Faroese ministry has proposed provisions on how to proceed if more than 12 Faroese vessels apply for permission.
