Hybrid data for large area mapping Hybrid data acquisition or the simultaneous acquisition of Imagery and Lidar primary started on a city level and with the first hybrid sensor, the Leica CityMapper. After some years of gaining experience in hybrid aerial mapping technology, the same concept was adapted to large area mapping by combining a large format aerial camera with a very powerful Lidar sensor. Combining both technologies in one flight has some big advantages over single sensor campaigns: 🔹 There is no time-shift between the datasets, so they are perfectly suited for downstream analyses and both show exactly the same situation. 🔹 Lidar is very accurate in the height component, whereas imagery has its strengths in the horizontal component, combining both gives you the best for all 3 dimensions. 🔹 Lidar can penetrate through vegetation and so provides important information of forests and is key to generate DTM data, imagery on the other side has higher resolution compared to Lidar and so can provide a lot more details from the surface. 🔹 Having only one flight lowers the operations cost to a large extend and reduces the risk of not finishing the job in time. During the #EAASI summit in Athens Layton Hobbs from Hexagon and Adam Augustynowicz from Opegieka gave a great presentation showcasing the advantage of hybrid sensors and how the use of a Leica ConutryMapper helped to successfully complete a large Imagery and Lidar project in Poland in time and with perfect quality. 💡 Comment | Like | Share 👉 Follow me (Dr. Uwe Bacher) for more insights on exciting topics from the world of geospatial #hybrid #aerialmapping #photogrammetry #lidar
