💡 Last week, Open Evidence participated in the kick-off meeting of a new project involving a feasibility study on integrated surveillance systems on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) encompassing human health, animal health, plant health, food, wastewater and the environment. 🤝 Together with our team from PwC EU Services , Università degli Studi di Verona and IBiS Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla, we will be working with EU Health and Food Safety and European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) to support EU Member States in the development of effective integrated One Health surveillance systems on AMR and AMC. 🇪🇺 This project further expands our support in the area of public health for EU institutions. We’re eager to continue supporting all EU goals in this area. #EU #PublicHealth #OneHealth #AMR #AMC #Surveillance

💊 Great programme today, on the occasion of the European #AntibioticAwareness Day #EAAD, at the "Symposium zum 17. Europäischen Antibiotikatag" organized by #BMSGPK with talks from the human, veterinary and environmental sector in line with the #OneHealth approach. 🌍 First talk given by D. Monnet from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on "Antibiotic resistance trends and emerging resistance in the EU/EEA: most recent data from ECDC" giving interesting insights how the EU and the individual member states including Austria are performing towards reaching their targets combating #AMR as outlined in the Council Recommendation of 2023. 👉 We are generally on a good path, with #carbapenem resistant Enterobacterales being a concerning exception. 👉 We can make a change by implementing actions like improved #handhygiene, #antimicrobial stewardship, public awareness, ... 👉 Many actions combined will make a difference! Let's tackle it together step by step! 👉 Investment costs for actions combating #AMR are also predicted to pay off financially Looking forward to many more exciting presentations!

Insights from Pakistan's National Action Plan (NAP) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). This plan is pivotal in combating the rising global challenge of AMR, which threatens both human and animal health. 📌 Best Part of the Policy: The holistic "One Health" approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health, is a standout feature. It ensures a comprehensive strategy to tackle AMR from all angles. 📌 Areas for Improvement: 🔸Setting specific timelines and measurable targets. 🔸Detailed resource allocation and funding mechanisms. 🔸Enhanced public and private sector engagement. 🔸Robust continuous monitoring and evaluation systems. 📌 Implementation Effectiveness: 🔸Awareness and Behavioral Change: Initial success in raising awareness, but efforts need to be scaled up. 🔸Regulatory Updates: Progress in updating regulations, but enforcement is inconsistent. 🔸Surveillance Systems: Progress in establishing integrated AMR surveillance systems, though full integration is pending. 📌 Challenges in Implementation: 🔸Limited financial and technical resources. 🔸Need for stronger institutional capacities. 🔸Inconsistent political will and governance challenges. 🔸Coordination challenges across sectors. 🔸Insufficient public awareness and engagement. The NAP is a significant step towards a sustainable and equitable health future. By addressing these gaps, we can ensure effective action against AMR, safeguarding health for generations to come.🌍💊🎉🦠🇵🇰 Pakistan NAP on AMR: https://lnkd.in/erq_rA6X #AMR #OneHealth #PakistanNationalActionPlan #PublicHealth #Policy #Awareness #Innovation #Healthcare #Environment #AnimalHealth

Today we had an incredibly insightful panel at the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress: "A One Health Approach: Wastewater Surveillance for AMR". The discussion highlighted the critical role of wastewater surveillance as a key tool in monitoring antimicrobial resistance (AMR), enabling a more integrated and effective response to this global challenge. The speakers brought valuable perspectives on how the One Health approach can tackle AMR: Alexandra Mendley – Associate Director for Antimicrobial Resistance, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), discussed surveillance initiatives in the U.S. Francesca Chiara – Chair, The AMR Narrative, emphasized the importance of clear communication on the impacts of AMR. Windi Muziasari – CEO of Resistomap, showcased advances in wastewater AMR monitoring technologies. Nichole Brinkman – US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), highlighted the role of the EPA in environmental surveillance as part of the One Health strategy. It was an enriching discussion on how the integration of public, environmental, and animal health can help address the AMR crisis. #AMR #OneHealth #WorldAMRCongress #antimicrobialresistance #wastewatersurveillance #innovation #CDC #EPA #Resistomap

In preparation for the UN high level meeting on AMR #AMRHLM that will take place in September this year, the AMR global leaders group #AMRGLG drafted recommendations for the member states to consider in advance. They are meant to support the process, facilitate specific commitments, and maximize the outcome of this critical event with the goal to "move the world from rhetoric to specific #commitments and action". The initial action plan by the GLG left two gaping blanks regarding financing, measurability of the outcome, and accountability. The new report now offers suggestions for exactly these pain points: - Mobilize additional stakeholders and leverage existing financing instruments. - Establish an independent monitoring board and national #accountability coordinators under the leadership of the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR #QJSAMR. - Strengthen antimicrobial use and resistance surveillance, prevent environmental contamination, and reduce the need for antimicrobials by boosting #prevention and control. As global targets by 2030 the group suggests: · To reduce death caused by AMR by 10%. · To reduce the use of RESERVE and WATCH antibiotics, so that 80% of human antibiotic consumption comprises ACCESS group antibiotics. · To reduce general agri-food antimicrobial use by 30-50% and eliminate the use of human important drugs in non-veterinary agriculture. To back up this report and to help mobilize financial resources the #QJSAMR built the economic case comparing the cost of implementing a defined package of #interventions combating #AMR to the cost of inaction. According to this report the global additional #healthcarecost for AMR would be $ 412 billion a year and another $ 443 billion per year in lost workforce productivity, based on average national wage. This would add up to 💸 $ 25,650 billion in 30 years. In contrast the total investment required for the intervention package across the regions was estimated at about US$ 1,420.7 billion for the 30-year period. This would, besides the development of new antimicrobials, include incentives to do so, implementing WASH and environmental hygiene, stewardship programs, education and diagnostics. The undeniable critical gap of #diagnostics that are essential and the basis for appropriate clinical care, antimicrobial #stewardship, and all surveillance efforts has been acknowledged - let’s hope diagnostics will get the airtime it deserves in September! https://lnkd.in/ecDh5wpq https://lnkd.in/eA7TwdJP
