Building Successful Online Marketplace Business (5) Create Your Minimum Viable Product (MVP) as Soon as Possible: While software development is crucial to the success of your marketplace, it is not enough to ensure its success. We have seen many cases where entrepreneurs invest all their initial resources into developing the platform, only to find that nobody is interested in using it. I refer to marketplaces that are technologically well-built but fail at attracting users as "desert platforms." During the initial phase of your project, your main goal should be to develop a minimum viable product (MVP) and launch it as soon as possible. This approach will help you validate your business idea without taking on significant risk or investing a large amount of capital. The learning process only begins once you have something to offer your users, so it is essential to get that as soon as possible. Your first product needs to have just enough features to solve your users' core problems. One thing you should not focus on initially is creating a perfect marketplace platform. I have met entrepreneurs who aim to develop a platform like Airbnb from the start—one with all the features, works worldwide, and is usable by all kinds of people. While having a global vision is important, all successful platforms began as minimum viable products. For instance, Airbnb initially launched with a site designed using WordPress, and many of their current features were built after they had proven that their basic concept worked. You do not need to think about scaling to millions of users right away. Instead, focus on finding ten people who are genuinely passionate about your concept. One of the most common mistakes entrepreneurs make is spending too much time and most of their budget on developing the platform before launching it. Instead, they should consider doing a manual first startup.
