Much of the findings from this report re-iterate the work that we were progressing back in 2019-2023 through the Local Thriving Communities reforms. Deliberative & participatory processes work but only if they are backed up with meaningful accountability mechanisms and effective power sharing. #policy #innovation #reform #accountability #powersharing #Reframedrelationship #wellbeing

At Carnegie UK we have published the findings from our Engaging Democracy programme. This was a fascinating bit of work, with multiple strands of activity. Bit of a long post follows with key insights. We talked both to those that had recently commissioned and/or run participatory or deliberative democratic processes as well as those who had participated in them. We wanted to understand if and how these democratic innovations contribute to Democratic Wellbeing. What we found was really interesting. Deliberative and participatory initiatives can and do positively contribute to people feeling like they have voice and choice in the decisions that affect them. But (and this is the really important bit) only if they are designed well and backed up by meaningful accountability mechanisms. This can often be overlooked. To harness this and address these areas of concern, we want to ensure that policy makers working on these issues focus on: 1) Increasing the quality of participatory democracy by establishing minimum standards of delivery & accountability. 2) Build the democratic literacy of decision makers to help them to better share power with those working at the most local level. 3) Seize the major global moment for democracy in 2024 to focus on improving our Democratic Wellbeing (data shows us in a bad state). I want to say a huge thank you from all of us at Carnegie UK to all those we spoke to, to help inform this work. Both those that had commissioned or run these kinds of projects and former participants of them gave generously of their time, knowledge and experience. Finally, a big thank you to our brilliant Democratic Wellbeing Champions that helped inform this project and all the great organisations that continue to do vital work to develop, highlight and mainstream new approaches to improve our democracy. The latest report on the impact of Outward Bound in Scotland is out now. ➡️ https://bit.ly/3wU3opK Teachers and youth workers see it all the time: these experiences truly transform lives. But our evaluation data reveals exactly what is happening - young people are returning from our centres with a boost in confidence, happiness, resilience, and school engagement. #morethanyouthink

“...Out of chaos comes significant opportunities for emerging young agents of change.” inFocus are honoured to have supported Springboard Opportunities Limited and ROE VALLEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION's "Beyond25" research project on Good Relations Practice with young people beyond the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. The report was launched this week via a webinar hosted by Springboard’s Stephanie O’Rourke and Sam McCaw. It dives into the effects of community-level conflict on young people and shares important insights around high levels of trauma, mental ill-health, and ‘them and us’ aspects to everyday life – especially in the context of peace walls and paramilitaries. Springboard's important research in this area has now resulted in an important resource on conducting successful Good Relations practice and how to ensure programmes are co-designed and seen by young people as meaningful and a driver for positive and sustainable change. The research went beyond Northern Ireland and looked at similar youth programmes south of the border and in England. This is a must-read for those who work in conflict-affected contexts and especially with young people. You can read more about the programme, watch the webinar and read the report on the Springboard website: https://lnkd.in/gYyDZ4uS International Fund For Ireland | Rural Action #youngpeople #goodrelations

Thank you Government Outcomes Lab, University of Oxford for providing me with the opportunity to contribute to this fascinating compendium of perspectives and experiences of working with Social Outcomes Partnerships in the UK over the last 15 years. In the essay I co-wrote with Eleanor Carter we reflect on the state of evidence of #SOPs. We highlight that a lot of the UK evaluations highlight the same thing: whilst challenging to develop SOPs sharpen partners’ focus on outcomes; align partners’ priorities; encourage the use of adaptive data-led management to respond quickly when implementation is off-track; can enable frontline staff to adopt a more person-centred and tailored approach to delivering services but can bring complexity and frictions. But we call on the sector to be more transparent in sharing data and lessons learnt. We also call for more thinking at the design stage to support quantifying the impact of SOPs - my dream of a SOP RCT is still unfulfilled! There are many other fascinating accounts in this report, from practitioners, commissioners, investors and academics. You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ek7FH5Ax

💥💥💥 Literally fresh off the press, as this morning we picked up the first copies of our new report 'The Evolution of Social Outcomes Partnerships in the UK', which brings together perspectives from #academia #policy and #practice to distill fifteen years of experience with social impact bonds / social outcomes partnerships in the UK. While Government Outcomes Lab, University of Oxford curated this report - it's the voices of many world leading experts that we've captured in the report and that I hope will make this a valuable resource for the #social #outcomes community (and beyond). In today's rapidly evolving society, it is imperative that NGOs, civil society organizations, foundations, and activists collaborate with government entities to ensure that vital information is readily accessible to our youth. Upholding the Batho Pele Principles, "Access to Information" must be a central tenet in our efforts to combat the spread of misinformation that fosters confusion and discord within our communities. An Access to Information Symposium would serve as a crucial platform, empowering young individuals with accurate knowledge that contributes to the nation's growth and positions our country as a global destination of choice. Moreover, leveraging social media as an educational hub can facilitate the exchange of well-informed updates, fostering a culture of collective responsibility and active participation in nation-building. Through these collaborative efforts, we can cultivate an informed generation poised to drive positive change and contribute meaningfully to our society. #AccessToInformation #AccessToInformationSymposium #WellInformedYoungPeople

💡 Public sector capacity matters, but what is it? 💬 As governments tackle complex challenges and pursue innovative solutions, understanding public sector capabilities is crucial. Our network partner, UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, is leading the way with their Public Sector Capabilities Index! Their blog dives deep into what makes a public sector organization truly capable. It's not just about individual skills, but a three-layered approach: 🔹 State Capacities 🔹 Organizational Routines 🔹 Dynamic Capabilities Public sector capacity matters – and understanding these layers is key to building stronger, more responsive services.
