India, OTN's Associate Director of Advocacy, and our friend Terry traveled to DC this week to present at the National Conference on Ending Homelessness hosted by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. They spoke about how our local, on the ground outreach work directly informs our advocacy work which is focused on pushing proactive policies at the intersection of creating housing, securing tenants rights, and responding to homelessness. It was such a privilege to attend and present at this conference and to connect with groups and individuals from all over the country doing such impactful work. The fight to end homelessness is a collective responsibility that requires a coordinated effort from all of us. The National Alliance to End Homelessness is leading the charge by mobilizing a diverse network of advocates, including policymakers, service providers, and community leaders. Together, we can leverage our expertise and resources to make a meaningful impact and ensure basic human dignity for all. Homelessness is a complex issue that demands a multifaceted solution. We must address the root causes such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, mental illness, and addiction. It affects our economy, public health, and collective conscience, underscoring the need for a broader network of advocates to join the fight. Advocating for policies prioritizing affordable housing, supporting organizations providing vital services, and educating our communities are crucial steps. By coming together, we can create real change and work towards a society where everyone has a safe and stable place to call home. Let’s unite, persist, and commit to justice in our shared mission to end homelessness. #EndHomelessness #Advocacy #CommunitySupport
EVERYONE working to end homelessness must use their voices and spheres of influence to advocate on behalf of their unhoused neighbors. Here's how to get involved, from the Alliance's Samantha Wood: https://lnkd.in/erh_Vzgf

"Displacing people out of sight and out of mind, through tickets, sweeps, and arrests, only addresses the mounting public pressure to solve visible homelessness, but it does nothing to address the root of homelessness itself nor end anyone’s episode of homelessness. When elected officials focus on displacing people, it results in a rise in camping bans and other punitive policies. Instead of solving homelessness, this approach only: • traumatizes people experiencing homelessness, • creates additional barriers to accessing housing, • displaces people to other unsheltered locations, and • wastes taxpayer dollars. Compare: $10,051 annual cost to provide supportive housing for someone experiencing homelessness. $31,065 annual cost per person for a city to enforce unconstitutional anti-panhandling laws, maintain hostile architecture, and conduct police raids of homeless encampments."

We had no idea what we would learn as we set out on our end-of-life journey with a tangible project—a not-for-profit funeral service owned and led by the community. Looking back four years, creating a simple project plan while building community support seemed straightforward. We initially thought our efforts would focus on fundraising rather than advocacy. However, we soon realised that our approach needed to be more community-centric. We are now advocating for the Queensland Government to help us address systemic issues that hinder community innovation in meeting local needs. With your support and collaboration from institutions like Sunshine Coast Council, we are confident that we can overcome these challenges. We want to engage with you: What role does the community have in the end-of-life and funeral space? How can we establish a productive relationship with the institutions that manage our essential community infrastructure? Should the community have a say in the outcomes of this work? How can we share information and collaborate effectively? Your insights are invaluable as we work through these important questions together. #CommunityEngagement #FuneralServices #CommunityInnovation #CommunityNeeds #PublicInfrastructure #Advocacy #CivicParticipation #CollaborativeApproach #SystemicChange #FuneralCare #CommunityVoice #CulturalAwareness #SunshineCoast #Queensland

🔍 **Law Tip of the Day: Advocating for Homelessness Policy and Funding** 🏛️ Today's law tip focuses on advocating for change in homelessness policies and funding. As citizens, we have the opportunity and responsibility to speak up on important issues that affect our community. Addressing the Mayor and Council Members at City Hall can be a powerful way to drive positive change in the area of homelessness. For nonprofits working in this space, it's essential to seek assistance and guidance on legal and funding matters. The Ofuani Legal Group stands ready to support organizations in navigating the legal complexities and accessing funding opportunities to better serve the homeless population. Advocacy matters. By raising awareness, voicing concerns, and pushing for policy changes, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community for those experiencing homelessness. In DEIB work, there’s a phrase I love: “Learn better, do better.” Being perfect all the time is never the goal; any humans seeking growth or change will continually realize ways we could be doing something differently to have the impact we seek. 💡So, it’s fitting that an org - that has taught me so much about DEIB, justice, advocacy, and racial equity - is now modeling that with a name change. 💡Referring to a person as a “homeless person” - we have come to realize - can be harmful. It labels a temporary situation with permanence, it robs the person of humanity, and it fails to center the true issue: a society that could be housing more humans and doesn’t do so. 💡While “homelessness” is still certainly a valid term, when we talk about humans impacted by it - we cause less harm if we say “unhoused” or “people experiencing homelessness.” This name change, logo change, and rebrand stills keep the acronym CCH that we know and love, while correcting the language and focus that will do the most good. As always, proud to be on the Board of this important change-making organization in Chicago. #InclusiveLanguage #DEI #DEIB #RacialEquity #Advocacy #Justice #Chicago #NonProfit #NotForProfit #NFP #Volunteerism #LearningAndDevelopment #CourageousLeadership #DareToLead
At CCH, we're committed to building community power and advancing racial equity through organizing, advocacy, legal assistance, and education. Our mission is clear: to prevent and end homelessness because housing is a human right. This is why we changed— We are now Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness, a new name and look rooted in power and dignity. CCH Board President, Maxica Williams on our rebrand: “This rebrand elevates placing those with the expertise of housing insecurities at the table to build power, advocate and lobby for policy changes with our voices and with dignity. The change in name reflects this, we must end homelessness.” Join us in coalition to address and end homelessness here: https://bit.ly/3LRa8bN #CCHRebrand #CCH #HousingIsAHumanRight #EndHomelessness #Leadership #SocialImpact
