🍃 Clean energy initiatives set for Kent 🤝 There have been a handful of key announcements of new clean energy projects of late, with Kent set to play host to several - including Low Carbon plotting a 500MW solar and energy storage park, and Nautilus. Nautilus was originally set to be built in Suffolk, but Ofgem has revealed the 1.4GW interconnector, which will link Belgian offshore windfarms to Britain, will now come ashore at the Isle of Grain in Kent. 🔗 Read more on the plans, as well as some of the other big stories of the past week, by visiting the story in our comments. #solar #energystorage #netzero #lowcarbon #energytransition

📰 "G7 to target sixfold expansion of electricity storage" - Financial Times, April 26, 2024 This headline is a clear reminder that #energystorage is crucial for a decarbonized society and economy. 🌍 The G7 countries are ramping up to increase electricity storage capacity to 1,500 gigawatts by 2030. This initiative aims to stabilize the power supply from intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar, ensuring consistent energy availability. 🔋 This move underscores the need for improved market design to translate macroeconomic consensus into microeconomic action. Moreover, there's a significant need for enhanced incentives to deploy energy storage solutions that can integrate renewable energy efficiently. #phelas #energystorage #longdurationenergystorage

“Despite the boost in ambition, NECPs fail to truly connect the dots with what now matters to make the energy transition a reality: grid deployment, modernisation, and flexibility.” finds SolarPower Europe’s recent report on National Energy and Climate Plans. The NECPs lay out the roadmap for Member States to reach their 2030 EU renewables targets from various energy sources. They are crucial for solar. “They form the basis for the EU-27’s energy policy and strengthen the business environment for solar investments in Europe – predictability, efficiency, and transparency.” Amongst other recommendations in the report, the lack of a solid plan for grids was highlighted. “While 20 Member States have at least partially described their investment strategy for transmission grids, only two of them have set up dedicated support or quantitative targets for distribution grids.” You can find all the analysis here: https://lnkd.in/gyP7Dba7 Image source: SolarPower Europe report Geoffrey Riggs| Georg Rute | Brian Berry | Layla Sawyer | Alberto Méndez Rebollo | Christian Kjaer | Mark Norton | Marie Hayden | Grace McLoughlin | Stephan Heberer | Peter Hughes | Max Luke | Julia Selker | Manuel Trigueiros Rafael Ferreira de Lemos | Jack McCall | Edward Wylie | Martin Andrae | Hedd Roberts | Jørgen Festervoll | Frederic Vassort | Lars Stephan | Sankara Subramanian | Dominic Quennell | Isobel Arrowsmith | Baptiste Gary | Erich Kaltmann | Wolfgang Troppauer

To meet rising energy demands while minimizing its carbon footprint, Germany has committed to generating at least 80% of their electrical consumption from renewable sources by 2030 and being climate-neutral by 2045. This will require alternative energy sources, such as wind, geothermal, and solar power, to be integrated into the grid and the existing infrastructure to be updated. Pressure is high to find alternatives to overhead power lines and combat the unpredictability of power loss as it travels. Their solution is to bury the power cables in the ground in a project known as SuedLink. However, to succeed, there are substantial hurdles they need to overcome. Gaining access to the power grid is now the biggest hurdle to Europe's expansion of renewable energy. With Europe's power networks upgraded too slowly to absorb more capacity, and sluggish grid-permitting procedures in many countries, some projects face waiting times of up to nine years to receive a permit. Hundreds of gigawatts of #wind energy projects are waiting for permits to connect to Europe's #power grid, a backlog that threatens to slow the shift to #green #energy. Latin America and Africa are areas of vast renewable energy potential, but to date, utilization of their wind and solar resources remains comparatively limited. This has negative implications for countries’ economic development, national and global climate ambitions, and energy firms that are unable to develop projects successfully. Governments should pursue specific actions to ensure the success of wind and solar energy in Latin America and Africa and support economic development and global energy transition targets. #SolarPower #WindPower #RenewableEnergy
