It was a simple yet beautiful moment when my research abstract was accepted at the Third European Student Conference on African Studies at the University of Basel in Switzerland. I had the privilege of presenting my research, which focused on understanding the impacts of skills training on graduates' employment outcomes. Through this study, I aimed to share with the world—starting with Nigeria and extending to Africa—a potentially overlooked aspect of upskilling: the types of jobs graduates secure as a result of skills training, the challenges they face, and the opportunities available to them. As with many research endeavors, new angles often emerge that weren't initially considered. This was the case with my study, which highlighted stakeholders who may have been overlooked in discussions about reforming higher education in Nigeria. The research revealed insights into the factors influencing both graduate employment and unemployment, contributing to policy ideas and programs aimed at improving higher education to better prepare graduates for current and future opportunities. I will share these findings publicly once the manuscript is completed. In the meantime, let’s reflect on a few questions: Is the role of higher education to build theoretical knowledge or practical skills? When graduates think of practical skills, do they focus mostly on digital skills and adapting to ever-evolving technologies that define today's workforce? Do most lecturers and professors possess knowledge and application of these rapidly changing technologies? Would it be best practice or even necessary to replace lecturers who lack such skills? Is this a sustainable solution? Would lecturers and professors embrace significant changes to the higher education curriculum when faced with their own skills gaps, or would they resist such changes? What incentives could drive this process? Alternatively, is it the responsibility of graduates to acquire these skills themselves? Do they have access to the necessary resources, information, and support systems? How do we best work with empirical findings that show volunteering and internships as the most effective means to upskill Nigerian graduates? How do we integrate these opportunities into graduate training programs without exacerbating inequality, exclusion, or exploitation—especially given the argument that volunteering, as a form of unpaid labor, can sometimes exploit graduates? Finally, is the issue of graduate unemployment really a matter of skills mismatch, or is it rooted in a lack of job opportunities? Some of these questions have been addressed in my research, and I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Mohammad Amir Anwar, and everyone who supported me along this journey. To my LinkedIn family, who shared my survey and accounted for 95% of my participants, your kindness means the world to me. I deeply appreciate your support. #HigherEducation #GraduateEmploymment #Skills British Council

This concept of a European multi institution joint degree is very exciting and presents many opportunities for mobility. A peer reviewed study I did for a provincial agency in 2013 looked at the Canadian experience in this area and found somewhat simpler two and three party models but this pushes the envelope even further. It also brings to mind interesting ways to support access such as for refugees. I recall back in the early 2000s working with faculty colleagues across several institutions around the world to deliver such a cross institutional degree that was accessible to those in refugee camps. One institution was the anchor for the degree credential and several others contributed courses. Yes, these opportunities challenge residency regs and cause creative disruption for transcription, course delivery, student information systems and more but what a worthy way to “break” longstanding practices and rules, create transformative opportunities, and support nurturing of global citizenry. Most interesting to watch this unfold. https://lnkd.in/g5wCAxCm

Lately, I've been contemplating the research priorities of Nigerian students studying abroad. I have a few applying for Masters degree abroad and I'm torn between whether they should concentrate on addressing the urgent human and climate challenges in Nigeria or in their study destinations like the US, UK, Canada, etc. My dilemma stems from a strong desire for Nigerian students, both at home and abroad, to prioritize research efforts aimed at enhancing information and data to inform policies that uplift lives. Given the existing scarcity of updated research information and the lackluster attitude towards research among young students, this decision feels particularly crucial. However, my stance would be that it’s essential to strike a balance and ensure that efforts are made to research both local and global issues. Advising Nigerian students abroad to engage in researching homegrown challenges is practical and beneficial for several reasons: 1. Global Impact- Research conducted by Nigerian students abroad has the potential to generate global awareness of Nigeria's challenges, attract international support and collaboration, and influence policies and initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges. 2. Understanding Local Context- Nigerian students abroad possess valuable insights into global best practices, which, when combined with a deep understanding of Nigeria's socio-economic and environmental dynamics, can lead to innovative solutions tailored to local needs. 3. Access to Resources- Many universities abroad offer state-of-the-art research facilities, funding opportunities, and mentorship programs, providing Nigerian students with the resources needed to conduct high-quality research on domestic challenges. 4. Networking Opportunities- Being part of international academic communities allows Nigerian students to network with experts from diverse backgrounds, fostering collaborations and knowledge exchange that can enrich their research endeavors back home. 5. Capacity Building-Engaging in research on Nigerian challenges while abroad can enhance students' research skills, critical thinking abilities, and problem-solving capabilities, contributing to their overall academic and professional development. #research #thesis #nigeriastudents #researchdevelopment #climatechange #humanchallenges #studyabroad
