Tip for super smart college students. Take PhD classes. In undergrad classes, they evaluate you on how well you are able to repeat back what they “taught” you. In PhD classes, they evaluate you on how well you can outsmart the professors by postulating ideas and criticisms they’ve not heard before. The mindsets you’ll acquire at PhD-level classes will far outweigh any technical or conceptual knowledge you could learn at undergrad classes. With the right mindsets and intuitions, you can absorb any knowledge instantly and completely independently. You should value and prioritize mindsets and intuitions over knowledge (if, and only if, what drives you in life is the pursuit of achievements like myself).

Is it advisable to leave a PhD program if it is not going well? Advice from a Professor with 30 years of experience 👇 Don't leave if your PhD is about to finish in 2 years but I have to admit that *I* left my first PhD program after one year. A variety of things led to this decision: (1) There were some academic pot holes that were before me that I was able to recognize (and be fearful of). (2) I had (uncharacteristically foresightful for me) re-applied to grad school in the Autumn ofp my first year as a grad student. I was admitted to several places, which meant that I had some options present: I wasn’t merely running from, I was running to. (3) Most importantly, I bailed on my 1st PhD program *in*my*first*year* — although I “lost” all of the coursework, as far as transcripts go, that was the least of my worries. And a couple of those classes were great. I didn’t really lose anything by taking them as far as intellectual content goes. #PhDTips

Finding a job outside of academia doesn’t necessarily mean quitting science. Looking at someone’s publication record doesn’t necessarily indicate whether they have left science; it’s more a measurement of whether they’ve left academia. And these two things are not the same. You can be a scientist both within and outside of academia. Research is possible beyond academic institutions. What are your thoughts? #PhD #academia -------------------------------- If you are a PhD, postdoc or midcareer academic who struggles with landing a position outside academia, take our survey that will give you personalized suggestions depending on where you are in your journey --> link in the comments 👇
