As Warehouse and inventory Managers,we as well manage the team we work with and here are approaches on how we can address such an issue incase it comes up. As a manager, it’s important to find ways to work with everyone, regardless of their attitude. The first thing you should ask yourself is “is this a new behavior?” This gives you a good starting point of where to go next. If yes, it’s time for a root cause analysis. As a manager, you should look inward first. “Am I asking someone to do something that is not in their scope?” is a good place to start on this. If yes, consider the method of delivery of whatever you said. Did the person interpret what you said incorrectly? Remember, it’s not always what you say, but how you say it. Also reach out to colleagues at the same level or above you (never talk HR with people below you unless specifically asked). They may have some insight on why the worker is acting this way. The next step is to sit down and chat with the employee, preferably with a witness, to discuss better communication between the two of you. This conversation may also bring up some things you were not aware of (family issues, concerns with work restructuring, etc.). This is a time to recalibrate their thinking, and also gives you a clear verbal warning. If the issues continue, write ups for insubordination should be pursued. Always get these further warnings written, as well as signed by the employee and a witness. If you get enough of these, you have documentation to support the release of employment. If this is not new behavior, there may already be a paper trail. Work with your superiors and HR to begin/continue documenting until either the behavior changes or the employee is terminated.

Few things drive me as crazy as seeing front line supervisors and managers intentionally NOT training and developing their people. Of course this isn't all of them. I've had some fantastic managers that took the time to develop and train me. But I've seen enough of these occurrences during my career in Supply Chain. People that are performing the shipping and receiving function, doing the exact same thing for years. Never being taught warehousing and material planning functions. Expeditors that have never been involved in the process of vetting vendors and issuing purchase orders. Some of the reasons they don't train include: Controlling power: Thinking that if no one knows more than them, then they'll always be "number one". But people don't forget that, and eventually they'll get promoted in areas. Sometimes even in charge of that very manager. Then what? Laziness: Just letting the operation run on autopilot, not getting involved much. Lack of confidence: Okay, this one I can understand a little better. Not everyone is good at explaining and teaching. But they CAN link up the employees with one another, and ensure that they show each other how to perform the functions. In the long run, the leader that develops their talent will gain a reputation in their company and industry. And they will WIN. #talentdevelopment #procurement #supplychain
