ICEBERG CATALOGS Yes, the changes to S3 addresses one of the main reasons using the “File System” catalog for Iceberg was discouraged (concurrent write consistency). Although the role of catalogs have evolved where you still truly want to use a catalog for features like catalog versioning (Nessie), RBAC (Polaris), and External Catalogs (Polaris). Here’s an article I wrote on why people should really be keeping a close eye on the Iceberg catalog space. Read Here: https://lnkd.in/gTvqZSxK #DataEngineering #ApacheIceberg
Two weeks ago, I shared the news that AWS has implemented conditional writes on S3, which could be significant for table formats. Julien Hurault wrote an excellent blog post about how some features of the Iceberg catalog could benefit from this feature. Remember, it's no longer a table format war with Tabular's recent acquisition but rather a catalog war! https://lnkd.in/eAJVPEYj

I love the topic of resiliency in IT systems. I talk about it, read about it (I can't wait for the new Sam Newman book: https://lnkd.in/dTxWwnET), and watch videos on the subject. There is a great new one published from this re:invent by Marc Brooker, who is on fire these days. I watched his third session, and all of them are fantastic, as are his latest blog posts. If you don't have time, just watch Takeaways section as a form trailer: https://lnkd.in/dnU3k8GB https://lnkd.in/d_V9JStG #resiliency #aws

I recommend this course because of the fair amount of knowledge gathered, presented in a clear way with the use of charts and practical AWS examples.👏

It’s that time of year again. Gemba Advantage have been good enough to send me to AWS Re:Invent 2024, and I’m kicking off with this one. Should be interesting to learn how Q interacts with the traditional platform elements in AWS. #reinvent2024
