Why go the extra mile? One of the customers on my queue, needed help with remote desktop access. He has a desktop computer and a laptop, and would want the interface of each device, to display on the other. That is where Remote Desktop Connection, a property of Microsoft comes into play, as it enables users connect to another computer, using a network. One important feature for this to happen is for the computer you are connecting to, to run on Windows 10 or 11 Pro. Fortunately, my customer's devices were both on Windows 10 Pro. His connection attempts before reaching out, could only display the laptop on the desktop, but not the desktop on the laptop as it gave an "Your credentials did not work" error. After understanding the issue and the solution (which was switching out the Microsoft account on the desktop and creating a local account with password then signing out the work account too, after confirming the customer has sign in details), something the customer had said struck me. Paraphrased, "I work from home and use my desktop for work but would be traveling soon. I want to be able to access what is on my desktop through my laptop" I realized that solving the current connection issue was not enough, as accessing the PC while traveling outside the PC network, has certain requirements. So, I advised the customer to get VPN or set up port forwarding on his router. Also, I shared a verified link that has the steps to do the setup at his convenience. The customer's elation on the additional information, was the highlight for me. What is the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)? The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a protocol, or technical standard, for using a desktop computer remotely. Remote desktop software can use several different protocols, including RDP, Independent Computing Architecture (ICA), and virtual network computing (VNC), but RDP is the most commonly used protocol. RDP was initially released by Microsoft and is available for most Windows operating systems, but it can be used with Mac operating systems too. Remote desktop is the ability to connect with and use a faraway desktop computer from a separate computer. Remote desktop users can access their desktop, open and edit files, and use applications as if they were actually sitting at their desktop computer. Employees often use remote desktop software to access their work computers when they are traveling or working from home. The RDP protocol opens a dedicated network channel for sending data back and forth between the connected machines (the remote desktop and the computer currently in use). It always uses network port 3389 for this purpose. Mouse movements, keystrokes, the desktop display, and all other necessary data are sent over this channel via TCP/IP, which is the transport protocol used for most types of Internet traffic. RDP also encrypts all data so that connections over the public Internet are more secure. #IT #RDP #helpdesk #network #technical_support #microsoft
