Digital spaces inherit the physics of the space and the container, just like physical space. If I put a cube in hyperbolic space, the space inside of the cube inherits the general laws of relativity. The space outside of the cube does not. I can use this to do *impossible* things. I can connect Energy and Entropy pumps to the cube to stabilize the environment inside of the cube for example. This article, by the eminent scholar Dirk Schulze-Makuch, sadly smacks of the diffidence that has historically directed human thinking about Others for thousands of years and poorly counsels thinking (including game-theoretical thinking) about first contact today. It is flawed, illogical, hegemonic — and if followed in its traditional path, will result in our falling into the Hobbesian trap and in catastrophe for humanity. Diffident thinking is a basal response — so implicit that it biases our thinking in ways we find difficult to recognise. The way forwards is to consciously seek to identify this implicit short-cut thinking, identify occasions where its is present, and effort should be spent on developing more robust axiomatic decision matrices to better guide first contact, as I have mentioned in my recent publication here: https://lnkd.in/gkZxuJf2
