Here's a review of Josh Winiberg's piece, an imagined opening cutscene for a JRPG. Something I forgot to mention in this video is that when you have a very mid-heavy mix, taming those frequencies makes everything else seem relatively louder. Loudness or impact is impacted very much by the context of everything else around the part in question - a flute playing very loudly might disappear almost entirely when the whole brass section is playing at the same time, for example. Same thing with frequencies - mid frequencies being too present makes the high frequencies and low frequencies sound weak. It's a balancing act. Hope that helps! Recording a string trio is slightly more complicated than you’d think, especially if you spent Year 10 music making origami out of the sheet music you were meant to learn. Besides writing the score, you’ve got to coordinate the rehearsal session, conduct (I’m on the left), adapt when certain sections don’t quite sound full enough and get it all done within a small timeframe.
