If we want a clean and truly different food system, we need to think about our supply chains in a whole new way -- one that is a win for ALL participants, not just a select few. What Colleen Kavanagh and Joni Kindwall-Moore have created with CIVC is unlike anything I have ever seen, and it is one of the most hopeful things that exists in the organic food industry today. It is next-level brilliant and badly needed. Read all about it in this week's Organic Insider. https://lnkd.in/e5KpvDaq #organic #organicfood #cpg #naturalproducts

What is organic? On my way to work today, I witnessed an activity which left me in shock. I saw a roadside vegetable grower fetching water from the gutter to water his vegetables. I usually hear of those activities but haven’t seen any myself until today. I stood there for a while watching him and I kept asking myself questions. Why on earth will someone water green leafy vegetables with that water? Knowing that we barely cook those vegetables and few people will wash with salt or vinegar. These same individuals will refer to those vegetables as Organic because they do not apply chemicals. How can that be organic when the source of water is bad? I kept thinking about the stench coming from the gutter. It’s sad to know that most of these vegetables in the market and vegetables used by food vendors may be coming from these growers. There’s a growing demand for safe and hygienic vegetables and it’s heartbreaking to know that what we might think is safe may actually not be. Gloria Agyare can we look at this on @TheFoodDiscourse. Let’s mitigate ways to deal with this. Who else has witnessed this? How do we get these growers to understand the consequences of their actions? Let me know in the comment section what we think about this. And if the vegetable growers have an association, kindly share the name so we can connect with them to solve this situation. What really is organic? These days we find a lot of products and food items tagged organic. I saw a black chilli sauce (shito) recently and it was named as Organic shito. The ingredients(oil, pepper, shrimp, dried herrings etc.) used, were they produced or derived from organic means? Recent skin care products in the market now are also being marketed as organic. These organic products shouldn’t be labeled organic but also certified organic. That we are sure the producers have gone through the right process. #organic #foodsafety #foodsecurity #creatingawareness

How many times can you re-boil milk? Is there a right way to boil milk in the first place? Choose farm fresh organic raw milk if you want to boil milk before use, as pasteurized milk is already boiled to 72 degrees centigrade before it is packed. Re-boiling it will result in the loss of micronutrients. While boiling milk, it is essential to use low to medium heat to avoid scalding and sticking to the bottom of the pan. Slowly bring the milk to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to distribute the heat evenly. It is recommended that you boil milk only once and consume it Repeated boiling of milk can also reduce the amount of vitamins and other micronutrients. At Akshayakalpa Organic, we have different types of organic milk for different purposes. You can choose from farm-fresh raw milk that requires boiling or enjoy the convenience of no-boiling-required pasteurized milk or on-the-go milk. If you like a creamier mouthfeel and don't like that malai layer separating from the top in your chai/coffee, you can opt for our homogenized milk. #organicmilk #akshayakalpaorganic #organicfood #organicfarming #akshayakalpa #boilingmilk #homogenisedmilk #rawmilk

Do you know? Organic produce has higher chances of contamination with bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella, due to prevalent use of manure derived from animal sources like cow dung etc. Proper washing and cooking are essential to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. Processed and packaged organic food like packaged fruit juices or breakfast cereals will come in the category of junk food. Organic claims in such products are meaningless. It is very easy for consumers to be duped by organic claims. For more, pl see https://lnkd.in/epbwzNfY
