Important event underway in Brussels today: Employment and Social Developments in Europe – Social convergence and the role of social investment. https://lnkd.in/eRXkrsdW I couldn't attend because of the launch of our Second WHO European #HealthEquity Status Report initiative in Venice/Italy earlier this week, but I am so grateful for the opportunity to catch up a few super insightful sessions online: https://lnkd.in/eFgP-Wmb Plus of course, digging deep into the latest annual Employment and Social Developments in Europe Review 9September 2024), which focuses precisely on that: social convergence and the role of social investment. The findings of the report show that social investments – such as reforms and financial support for early childhood education and care, skills development, vocational training, job creation schemes, or wage subsidies – boost employment, social inclusion and economic growth. 📢 Social investments and reforms yield higher returns when focused on early stages of citizens' lives and critical transition periods such as ageing 📢 I invite you to take a look at how WHO European Office for Investment for Health and development takes on #socialinvestments #impactinvestment #investmentforhealth #wellbeingeconomy to connect the dots between the #SocialRights agenda, the #HealthEquity & #Wellbeing and the #Economic and #Finance frameworks. https://lnkd.in/e6tATDkE Christine Brown Yannish Naik Jihane Tawilah Francesco Corti Katarina Ivanković Knežević Mariana Dyakova Graham Randles Yongjie Yon Ledia Lazeri

In his article for the Daily Maverick, Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi argues that our youth possess the potential to become active participants and beneficiaries of today's significant technological advancements. This, in turn, can catalyse the South African economy and generate positive impacts on society. To realise this potential, Professor Mpedi emphasises the necessity for "an investment in education that equips the youth with necessary skills, fosters ethical technological development, promotes localised research and development, encourages collaboration between humans and intelligent technology, addresses disparities, and facilitates responsible technological adoption." Are you interested in investing in education to contribute to this vision but unsure where to begin? The main topics discussed were the quality of jobs, the cost of the gender gap, remote work and the right to disconnect, AI in the workplace, and housing. In the last 20 years, rental prices in the EU have increased by 35%, while overall housing costs have surged by 75%. However, incomes have only risen by 17%, making housing increasingly unaffordable for many. This survey is produced annually by the IMD Institute for Management Development. Six out of the world's most competitive economies are in Europe. Singapore is in top position, Switzerland is second, HK is fifth and Sweden is sixth. Amongst these, Sweden is the highest taxed country, but this is set off by a high level of social equality and hence high level of social stability, both of which help efficiency. Australia is 13th.

Proficiat, Indonesia! The Council of the OECD’s decision on 20 February 2024 to open the discussion on the accession of Indonesia into the group marked a new milestone for the nation. Why? When the founding countries signed the Convention on the OECD - OCDE in December 1960, Indonesia was recovering from the regional disturbances in Sumatra, Sulawesi, and West Java, and the economic pressure caused by the Trikora and Dwikora. At the time of OECD’s foundation, Indonesia was facing existential challenges, a ‘like a fish gasping for water’ situation (borrowed from Prof. E.U. Kratz, a context that resonated finer in our Minangkabau’s ears). OECD declares itself as “a global policy forum that promotes policies to preserve individual liberty and improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world”. While economic and social welfare policies can be nonchalantly universally adopted, yet when it concerns cultural values, Indonesia will preserve individual freedom “with Indonesian flavours” (inspired by the phrase introduced by President Xi Jinping in 2014 on the 110th anniversary of Deng Xiaoping’s birth, “socialism with Chinese characteristics”). For many, that Indonesia belongs to G20 is something ordinary. To align with the OECD’s mission, Jakarta should be able to translate the economic magnitude to a balanced distribution of wealth and trickle it down to the laymen. Beware of the middle-income trap. However, some may think that there are significant factors behind the urgency to possibly invite Indonesia now into the OECD after entertaining her on the veranda as a key partner country since 2007. Beyond the economic rise, are there indications that Jakarta has gained the capability to project her economic clout into high politics? Is it linked with Indonesia’s more assertive behaviour on crucial global issues such as equality for the Global South, the Russo-Ukrainian war, and peaceful solutions in the Middle East? Then the BRICS. Has the “irresistible shift of global power” (Thanks to Prof. Kishore Mahbubani who set this term in motion) made Indonesia a ‘gemoy’ player and this eventually plays an incentive role? Following her independent and active foreign policy principle, for Indonesia, it is important to be part of global blocs. Indonesia’s national interests are synchronic with the interests of a better world. In the past, this stance created an annoyance for dominant binary powers that tend to polarise the globe: with us or against us. But, those who proportionately understood this peculiar Jakarta’s position usually could reap higher mutual benefits. The decision to negotiate on possible accession indicates that the OECD indeed understands Indonesia inside out. Although the road for Indonesia to become a full OECD member is lengthy and winding, it is on the right track. My dream is the dream of hundreds of millions in Indonesia and billions of others in The Netherlands and elsewhere.
