A few months ago, I posed a question to the MalaysianPAYGAP community about their dislikes concerning career fairs and career-related events. Their responses:
❌ Speakers who have products to sell afterwards
❌ Poor ventilation at the venues
❌ Low-quality food offerings
❌ Career fairs resembling 'slave markets'
❌ Companies instructing them to apply online
What they are expressing is essentially a distaste for inauthenticity, coupled with a longing for genuine, soulful human interactions. This mini survey made me realize that while there are many career fairs out there, and conferences for bosses, but there isn't one that truly celebrates us, the working people.
This realization has inspired the vision to curate a summit tailored exclusively for us! The entire event planning is rooted in the core principles of MPG: peer-to-peer support, a growth mindset, and transparency.
It has been a challenging few months of planning, seeking trust and support from companies. Countless of rejections later bounced back into Eunice Yin Ern and my mailbox; this summit MUST still proceed, with or without sponsorship. After all, the primary goal is not to secure sponsors but to OCCUPY a space where the voices of working individuals are valued and exchanged. Also how many times can an online community like MPG experiment and play with a vision? Probably only few or once in a lifetime!
If not now, when? If not us, who?
Speaker curation is an ongoing effort, thank you Aaron Tang for giving MPG the first 'yes', which given me a much needed booster to get more 'yes' from Ts. Fatin Fatihah Z., Amirah Onn, Aaron Sarma, Ling Yah, Warren Leow, Peter Yong, Mei Phing Lim, Sim Ling KU, and hopefully Dinesh Jayabalan, Lim Ben-Jie, and Hani Latif!
NGL: I feel like playing Pokemon Go trying to get all the best & rare, low-key corporate slayers together to show the workforce in our country who they can role model after!
