The Strait of Gibraltar, also known as (The Pillars of Hercules), is a narrow sea passage that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from North Africa. It has an approximate length of 60 km and a minimum width of 14 km. This strait has historically been of great strategic importance, both commercially and militarily, due to its location that controls access between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The Strait of Gibraltar is also known for its marine biodiversity, including the presence of several species of cetaceans. The currents in the strait are complex, with a surface flow of Atlantic water entering the Mediterranean and a deep flow of Mediterranean water leaving the Atlantic. In geopolitical terms, the waters of the strait are under the jurisdiction of Spain and Morocco, with the British enclave of Gibraltar situated on its northern shore.
