🚨 Features of "Video Quality Monitor", episode 1 🚨 In a previous post, I wrote that I was going to present the many functionalities of "Video Quality Monitor" (VQM). Let's start with the metrics available in VQM. VQM contains metrics to measure: - perceived #video #quality, with 3 pixel-based metrics dedicated to HEVC, H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) and MPEG-2 - perceived video quality, with 2 parametric metrics (which use information from bitstream) dedicated to H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) and MPEG-2 - perceived video quality, with 2 hybrid metrics (which use both pixel values and information from bitstream) dedicated to H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) and MPEG-2 - perceived #audio #quality (based on audio samples values, for any audio codec) - audio/video synchronization (#lipsync) - #jerkiness (image freezing), predicting the impact of jerkiness or #rebuffering events on perceived quality (especially for #OTT services) - video #noise (to benchmark #video #cameras) - #bloom (= colorfulness, to benchmark #displays) - video and audio decodability (ultra fast decoding to count the numbers of decoded video frames and decoded audio samples in order to #check the real duration of audio/video files) - #loudness, according to ITU and EBU recommendations - spatio-temporal activity (in order to find the most #complex scenes in long movies, so that you can use them to #benchmark video #encoders) Would you like to evaluate these metrics? Sometimes, the world throws something at me that shows me how long I have been doing this Media Tech thing and how much the tech advances. This week I installed a TRIAX DVB-T2 "modulator" in my home to carry a video signal to all the TV's in our home; it puts our video doorbell on to a digital TV channel. For those with knowledge of this kind of stuff, it's a real-time MPEG4 1080p video encoder with AAC audio encoding from a HDMI source; it has a built-in SCPC multiplexer and an OFDM modulator (DVB-T2). This bit of kit cost me just over £150!!! My first job in media was installing DVB real-time video encodiing headends, back when MPEG-2 standard definition was the thing. Back then a real-time video encoder was 12U of 19 inch rack, the multiplexer another 12U, a modulator filled the rest of a full rack. You would not get much change out of £1m!!! (around £2.4m today) The shift from a piece of £1m broadcast tech to, an arguably higher specification, piece of consumer tech costing under £200 is incredible. What have we learnt from this? For me, this is to build this in to your plan, whether you call it #MooresLaw or just technology advancing, you need to plan for it. If you are a hardware vendor, at which point does software out run you, at what point does tech, abstraction and virtualisation become so cheap it shifts your plan and the solution to the problems you are paid to solve. #broadcastmedia #ibc2024 #CTO #technology #digital video #dvb

What would you do if you need to set the audio apart from the video in SDI signals and use each one separately for other purposes? In broadcast production industry, this is done very easily by utilizing Embedders and De-embedders modules. While De-embedders can separate audio from video, Embedder modules can merge any audio with any video and form a new AV SDI signal to be routed for on-air or pre-recorded productions.
