We are delighted to launch our European New Energy Atlas and Growth Markets Report 2024. In this report we consider the opportunities and challenges facing organisations engaged in or wishing to enter the renewables market. We undertook extensive research with Qamar Energy to explore and rank the attractiveness of various electricity generation technologies (solar, wind, hydropower, bioenergy, nuclear, and ocean energy), as well as new energy and decarbonisation technologies (hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, and electric vehicles). The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems' recent report underscores the remarkable cost efficiency of photovoltaic technology. In Germany, solar PV emerges as the most economical electricity source, with an impressive levelized cost of energy ranging from €0.041 to €0.144/kWh. Connecting PV to batteries proves to be more cost-effective than traditional gas, coal, nuclear, and hydrogen power plants. I’m thrilled to share insights from the latest World Energy Markets Observatory (WEMO) report, which provides a detailed look at the changing global energy landscape. In 2023, renewable energy saw record-breaking growth, with a 14% increase driven by solar. ☀️ However, despite this progress, fossil fuel consumption rose by 1.5%, contributing to a 1.2% increase in greenhouse gas emissions. 🌫️ This shows that while we’re making progress, there is still more work to be done. To stay on track, we must accelerate clean technologies and increase investments in renewable energy, such as solar, wind, hydroelectricity, green heat, and nuclear power—including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2030. Capital markets’ confidence in funding projects related to Australia’s energy transition has rallied in the past two years. Investors are increasingly willing to plough billions of dollars into Australian renewable energy projects. Interestingly, nuclear energy ranked last on the list of technologies to which investors were seeking exposure. Nearly half of all the respondents ranked renewable energy as the top opportunity they believe will deliver the best long-term returns for their beneficiaries. Investors are also seeking opportunities in areas such as energy storage, critical minerals needed to build clean technology, and green hydrogen.
