metroSTOR solutions are helping improve waste management provisions for Lincoln City Councils high-rise buildings, with external waste and recycling hubs replacing internal refuse chutes at the Shuttleworth House development, reducing fire risk and maintenance costs while promoting recycling. Refuse chutes, though convenient for residents, pose significant health and safety risks, especially with modern household waste volumes and larger refuse sacks causing frequent blockages, increasing fire hazards but also leading to costly maintenance. metroSTOR PBM Bin Storage Housings, with capacity for six 1100L wheelie bins, can now be secured externally at a safe distance from the properties. The units are specified with a fire resistant liner system, while clearly marked large and small bag apertures to make it easy for residents to separate their waste and recycling. Piles of trash on sidewalks is a serious quality of life issue in older cities like New York, but there are ways to fix this. The city has been piloting the use of garbage containers. Instead of surrendering so much space on our streets for cars, removing 2-3 on street parking spots per block makes room for these containers, which help keep our streets clean and promote more sensible waste management. I hope this becomes more commonplace and would love to see something like this implemented for the streets of Philly. #urbanplanning

Maybe you caught the news that NYC is going to start putting its trash in trashcans? We did, but we still had questions. So Grace Snelling called up Joshua Goodman from the NYC Department of Sanitation to have a conversation about what's really happening with the city's trash. Here's everything you need to know about how NYC plans to "containerize" the 16 billion pounds of trash the city produces each year. My favorite takeaways: -NYC has long had troubles with trash. In the 19th century the city was littered with horse carcasses ( 😬 ) because there was no waste management plan. -The city produces 16 billion pounds of trash every year. 16 BILLION POUNDS. Every day, residents create 24 million pounds of trash, in case you were curious. -The city's new plan to put trash in containers requires a new custom truck that can lift up the big containers that high-density commercial + residential buildings will use. Starting today, all #NYC residential buildings with nine or fewer units must put their trash in containers for collection. This is part of the city's ongoing effort to combat the rat problem. After a grace period, fines will begin on January 2, so get prepared! Commercial buildings have already made the shift to containerized waste collection earlier this year.
