On 6 November, we held an award ceremony to present the 2024 Max van der Stoel Award to youth environmental group NATUR OG UNGDOM from Norway. During the ceremony, Gytis Blaževičius, Leader of Natur og Ungdom, reminded us that, “this Award for Natur og Ungdom is a recommendation and a reminder that human rights violations cannot go unresolved.” Natur og Ungdom member and Sámi activist Elisabeth Regine Myrland added: “It is a no-brainer that all people, and especially minorities, have to be included and respected in the decision processes regarding the climate transition we have to go through. The transition has to be safe and just for everyone.” The Jury of the Max van der Stoel Award selected Natur og Ungdom in recognition of its efforts to give young people of all backgrounds in Norway a voice in environmental policy. Dear friends and colleagues, Join your voice to ours: in the face of ongoing environmental challenges, civil society organisations and social movements are coming together to call on the Member States of the Council of Europe to protect the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment through an additional protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights. As the triple planetary crisis escalates, the importance of protecting the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment has already been reflected by the UN Human Rights Council in 2021, by the UN General Assembly in 2022, and by over 160 countries worldwide. However, the *Council of Europe (CoE), the continent's strongest system for the protection and enforcement of human rights*, representing 46 Member States and over 700 million citizens, *has yet to officially recognize it*. We respectfully ask you to endorse this letter and to share this call as widely as possible with other organisations that might be interested in joining this cause. The time for Europe to protect this right is NOW! Such a protocol would not only strengthen the existing legal system but also enhance the European Court of Human Rights' ability to protect environmental rights. It would also send a strong signal to both national and international communities, affirming Europe's commitment to tackling the environmental crisis and providing its citizens with an enforceable right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. We've signed, please sign as well: https://lnkd.in/dA9SbhyJ

Let’s work together to push the boundaries of environmental communication.

Another HELCOM superstar, Marta Ruiz sharing some of her views on #marinegovernance in the Women in Marine Governance (#WIMG) series: ✨ "The truth is that I am happy with what I do, because it has a meaning, a purpose, and because that purpose is not only for myself, but aims at leaving things better than I found them in relation to the marine environment." ✨I know it may sound naive, but please follow your dreams and try not being selfish, it is more rewarding than you could ever imagine. #BalticSea #marineenvironment PERMAGOV EU
Making EU ocean governance more integrated, collaborative, and better optimised for the Green Deal implementation
Having previously worked on marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean, Marta Ruiz is now helping HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission to improve the state of #BalticSea, by addressing issues like 🥤 Marine litter 🔊 Underwater noise 👾 Non-indigenous species Marta believes that everyone has a role to play in marine governance. Our actions - but also inaction - will determine whether marine environments become healthy and sustainable in the long run, and whether ultimately we are going to benefit from them, or suffer the consequences. Council of Europe and #Environment 📅 Mark the date: 29-30 Oct 2024, Strasbourg 12th Conference on the Council of Europe Landscape Convention - the 1st day is open to media! The 12th Conference on the Council of Europe Landscape Convention will take place on 29-30 October 2024 in Strasbourg, bringing together representatives of the States Parties to the Convention. This pivotal event will focus on enhancing cooperation among member states, aligning with the new priorities set out by the Heads of State and Government during the 4th Summit of the Council of Europe, held in Reykjavík on 16-17 May 2023. The conference will serve as a platform for dialogue on the Convention’s future programme of activities, as well as its role in advancing the Council of Europe’s broader objectives in the fields of human rights and the environment. Delegates will consider the key points of the Reykjavík Declaration, reflecting the heightened commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development across Europe. By fostering collaboration among member states, the conference aims to strengthen the collective efforts toward sustainable land management and environmental protection, in line with the evolving challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity loss. The Council of Europe Landscape Convention, also known as the Florence Convention, was adopted in 2000 to promote the protection, management, and planning of landscapes across Europe. It recognizes landscapes as a fundamental part of Europe’s identity, shaping cultural, ecological, and economic life. The Convention encourages public authorities and local communities to engage actively in the sustainable stewardship of their landscapes. 💡 Find out more about the conference here: https://lnkd.in/eTuMB5kT 📑 Deepen your knowledge on the protection of landscapes by the Council of Europe / the Landscape Convention: https://lnkd.in/eztvvKr7 🌄 the Reykjavík Declaration (cf. There's much to learn from in this new report. If you work in the field of International Development, no matter what specific area, recognition and respect for Human Rights should be hardwired deep into the why ànd ways you do what you do. Though this report focuses on nature conversation, many of the ideas apply more broadly. But lets not just maintain them, rather let us improve them, and learn to eliminate practices that undermine them.
