I am pleased to share an insightful blog post that addresses a critical issue in our education and workforce landscape. The article highlights a recent decision that prevents White British students from applying for a security services internship, raising important questions about diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity in recruitment processes. This development invites a thoughtful discussion about the implications for aspiring young professionals and the broader context of representation in security and intelligence sectors. Exciting news for William & Mary and Virginia’s cybersecurity ecosystem! The university has secured congressional funding to expand its National Security Career Program, offering more internships and hands-on learning experiences. This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase the percentage of graduates with applied learning experiences from 44% to 85% by 2026. Internships play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of leaders in the national security sector. By providing hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges, interns gain invaluable skills that not only benefit their personal growth but also contribute to the advancement of Virginia’s industry as a whole. By investing in internship programs, we not only invest in the future of our talent pipeline but also in the future of our nation's security. Together, let's continue to cultivate talent, foster innovation, and propel Virginia to the forefront of the national security landscape. #NationalSecurity #Internships #VirginiaLeadership #cybersecurity https://lnkd.in/eg-Yv2DN

After two industry professionals asked me about internships relevant to the space sector last week, it's clear there's growing interest. While we typically focus on securing highly established and technical professionals for our clients, here are some programs I know of: Gilmour Space Technologies: https://lnkd.in/gpi_CQBz South Australian Space Industry Centre (SASIC): https://lnkd.in/gpK9eXiM Lockheed Martin Australia: https://lnkd.in/gDWW7tPc Australian Signals Directorate (ASD): https://lnkd.in/ggZmCudS Nova Systems: https://lnkd.in/gU5eyrRB Inovor Technologies: https://lnkd.in/gVa-G6sz Saber Astronautics: https://lnkd.in/gMskeERx CSIRO: https://lnkd.in/gWQuezhW Defence STEM Cadetship Program: https://lnkd.in/g3JxhWWv John Deere: https://lnkd.in/gr_FfRX9 Gridware: https://lnkd.in/gH6BPGmX CyberCX: https://lnkd.in/gjTP75RN KMPG (Search engineering): https://lnkd.in/gT2r6ZHA I've included some cyber in there too as it's becoming increasingly relevant to the sector. If you're aware of other internship opportunities, please share them below. Also, if you running a tech, cyber, or engineering company that hasn't yet considered offering internships or graduate programs, it might be worth exploring. #opportunities #internships #engineering Dr Imogen Jones Jacqui Tyack P.S Australian Space Agency does have a 'Career Building Blocks' page, but only lists one internship program currently. Keegan Buzza, Nicholas Pipe would you be open to hosting opportunities as a live directory? It might be laborious but highly valuable to the community. Would be great to discuss.

I joined forces with Angela C. Thomas & Dr. Kathleen Baxter to speak about recruiting & retention challenges in state government to a full house at the NASC Annual Conference (NASACT) in Lexington this morning. Here's a few key takeaways: 1. Simplify job application processes 2. Provoke careers with internships to identify talent 3. Hire for soft skills, teach additional skills on the job 4. Update job descriptions to match employee skills #TeamInfor #recruiting #retention #retentionstrategy #workforcetrends #govtjobs #govtech

Happy second Monday! Time yet again for some more #unpopularopinion: You really never know who you will inspire. As an adjunct and teaching online, it is sometimes hard to know if you are actually connecting with your students, particularly the traditional pipeline undergrads. I taught a class on #cyberterrorism and it was a mandatory class for both the IT and Homeland Security degree paths. As such, about half of my students wanted to go in to IT/Cyber and the other wanted to be FBI agents. Half had a good technical background, and others were just people who have used tech all their lives. Here is the wild part, the students who still reach out to me from that class, are the ones that weren't IT majors. They have reached out asking about internships, about things they could do to learn more, and general life advice. I would have never thought that I actually made a real impact on these students. Simply because I was outside of their core interest. BL: Just because you don't think you had an impact, doesn't mean you didn't. You could very well have been a mentor without ever knowing it. #unpopularopinionguy

#internships have started, but it's never too early to think ahead to Summer 2025. Preparing now is a MUST if you're interested in the 3-letter/intelligence agencies: Central Intelligence Agency (#CIA) Federal Bureau of Investigation (#FBI) National Security Agency (#NSA) Drug Enforcement Administration (#DEA) Turn your sound up (and PAUSE when needed) for 5 Things to Know about Intelligence Internships because the timeline is a lot shorter than you think. #students | #experientiallearning | #hbcus | #recruitment June 5, 2024

#APLChampions - Jordan Thomas 🌟 "I was that kid who was always fixing people’s computers — family, neighbors and so on. In high school, I started a small company doing that for small businesses and franchisees of big national companies. It was the ’90s, when people were starting to do things on computers that had always been done on paper. I was doing systems integration before I knew to call it that. Coming out of undergrad, I had done a lot of internships, including one in the defense industry. I was working on tactical communications systems for the Army, the Marine Corps and some of our nation’s international partners. One of the best parts of that work was having our prototypes tested by soldiers and Marines in the field. It’s very gratifying to have end users put their hands on your system, break it and tell you why it’s wrong. After that I transitioned to a small satellite networking company, doing 24/7 operations for government clients. It was enjoyable, challenging and meaningful work with a demanding schedule — there was a lot of craziness on evenings and weekends, so it was tough on my family. I had friends at APL who were encouraging me to apply, so I did. Working at a university affiliated research center, or UARC, is very different from any of my other experiences. We focus on the mission need with the bigger picture in view, helping both government and industry work together to meet that need. Now I work on communications systems and networking for strategic users — senior leaders in the military and the government — to make sure they can talk to whomever they need to, whenever they need to. Knowing our work has a real impact on users and our nation’s security is what gets me excited to come to work every day." Interested in a career like Jordan's?
