That was one of the takeaways from Asia Fruit Logistica’s Jakarta Business Meet-Up, which brought together leading players from across Indonesia’s fresh produce business for a day of networking and knowledge-sharing. Significant challenges remain on the supply side, however. Imported fruits also face supply challenges, attendees heard. Indonesia’s import licensing system restricts the volume and range of imported fruits. Indonesia's coffee industry has historical roots, tracing back to the 17th century when Dutch colonialists introduced coffee cultivation in Batavia (now Jakarta). After overcoming challenges like flooding, the country began exporting coffee to Europe in the early 1700s. A significant advancement in processing, known as wet hulling, emerged in Aceh during the late 1970s, enabling faster payments for producers. Today, Indonesia ranks as a prominent coffee producer, with regions such as Aceh, North Sumatra, and Bali known for their specialty varieties. The industry faces challenges due to fluctuations in global demand and local consumption trends; however, there is a growing interest in high-end specialty coffees, with producers increasingly selling directly to consumers via platforms like Instagram. This movement reflects a national pride in coffee production and has led to shorter supply chains that benefit farmers with better prices. As domestic demand for specialty coffee rises, it may contribute to stability in the market, allowing high-quality lots to remain in Indonesia.
