Inspiring Talk by Mark Bristow, CEO Barrick I had the good fortune to hear Mark Bristow speak very candidly at the CEO's Panel. Other larger than life CEO’s in attendance were Cassie Boggs of Hecla Mining Company, Mitchell Krebs of Coeur Mining, Inc., Paul Lang of Arch Resources, Inc and Vicky Peacey of Rio Tinto. Question by Denise Johnson (who moderated the session very well and asked great questions): "So as you continue to work in more risky areas, how do you manage that risk more effectively? How do you mitigate the risk?" Reply by Mark Bristow Barrick (which hit home especially with regard to their Reko Diq Mining Company (RDMC) site): "I think everywhere in the world today, people want to participate in their country's economy and no matter what level, and they also want see responsible investment. The world is changing and we need to embrace that. To do that, you need to divide the economic pie or the economic benefits equally. We in the West, capitalist driven, have always looked to maximize profits. That game is over for miners I believe. Because no matter how we own the mines that we operate, they're actually a national asset. So we have a responsibility to our host countries and their people to ensure that not only do we give work, but we give business to the business people and we contribute to the central government treasury and we make a difference in everyday life. And I think miners are way ahead of most other industries in recognizing that the rules have changed." #mining #autocom #MINExpo #Pakistan #ESG #sustainability

ENVISION THIS 21st CENTURY SCENARIO… Two major critical minerals mines operating hand-in-hand with a state-of-the-art carbon capture and storage facility, all situated within the bounds of a single contiguous property. Together, they create a combined carbon-neutral emissions footprint, fully supported by a unified infrastructure. BC Mining Properties firmly believes that such possibilities are not only conceivable but achievable within the realm of the MAC Property. https://lnkd.in/gCEWTysi

Delighted to have the opportunity today to explore some of the tensions and opportunities emerging for land access brought about by the energy transition with this outstanding group of people (and a big shout out to Catherine Garlick who we missed!). We discussed; -tensions for exploration and new mines in an environment where land competition is increased - opportunities for re-purposing mining assets and land for renewable energy projects -how operating and new mines may consider working with renewable energy development projects - potential opportunity created through WA’s new diversification lease tenure - how benefit sharing arrangements with communities have evolved with relevance for mining and renewable energy projects - considering access to pre-competitive data for activating the mining estate for renewable energy projects - questions on who is responsible for planning and identifying potential sterilisation risks The energy transition is giving rise to a new conversation on how we use land with significant implications for mining. There are both opportunities and tensions created by renewable energy project development and as an industry we should be looking across our exploration, operating, closing and legacy mines estate.
Our panel discussion at Future of Mining Perth 2024 is kicking off! Thank you to Jillian D'Urso for stepping in to join Andrew Bailey from MinEx CRC and Rebecca Getty from BHP, with Guy Boggs chairing. Wishing you a speedy recovery Catherine Garlick, we’ll miss your contributions.
