Our President and CEO, Michael Goehring took to the stage to moderate an insightful panel on critical minerals at the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) Annual Summit in #Whistler yesterday. The panel discussed responsible mining and mineral processing within the Pacific Northwest region; opportunities to build out a regionally based critical mineral supply chain; and enhancing First Nations and Indigenous participation and partnerships within the sector, across the region. One of the key takeaways from the panel: with the right policy direction, the region can host a robust #criticalmineral supply chain to support climate action, economic reconciliation and help meet North America’s technology, defence and security objectives. Along our engineering careers in mine waste management we make hundreds of decisions that involve lives, the environment and significant amounts of money. Those decisions need to be objective and based on data, strategically applied and following principle-based foresight. While the technically-driven expertise is a major component for objectivity, how the decisions are tolerated require an equally important attention. Bias towards thoughtful action is key. As our final day at PDAC draws to a close, we attended an interesting panel discussion on Indigenous-led impact assessments: Moving from consultation to collaboration. The insights shared by the panelists, drawn from case studies in the Northwest Territories, Quebec, and British Columbia, underscored the importance of both collaborative and context-aware approaches.   Three key takeaways on Indigenous-led impact assessments: - Fosters stronger bonds between project proponents and First Nations, Inuit and Metis resulting in more equitable and mutually beneficial IBA's - Empowers Indigenous communities to gather richer, more comprehensive data enabling better-informed decisions and targeted mitigations - Allows for a more holistic approach to Indigenous Knowledge inclusion and application #pdac2024 #criticalminerals #mining #economicreconciliation
