New Orleans hosts several major events throughout the year, each drawing significant crowds that can temporarily boost the city’s population. Here are some notable examples: ● Mardi Gras: This world-famous festival attracts around 1.4 million visitors annually1. The city’s population swells significantly during the two-week celebration, especially on Fat Tuesday. ○ ● Jazz & Heritage Festival: Known as Jazz Fest, this event draws about 400,000 attendees over its two weekends1. The influx of visitors adds a substantial number to the city’s usual population. ○ ● Essence Festival: This music and cultural event brings in approximately 500,000 people each year1. Held over the Fourth of July weekend, it significantly increases the city’s population. ○ ● New Orleans Saints Home Games: The NFL games at the Caesars Superdome can attract up to 73,000 fans per game1, adding to the city’s population on game days. These are only SOME events, that highlight how New Orleans’ population can fluctuate dramatically depending on the time of year and the events taking place. ** Truly, New Orleans has many other events year round, where people typically book many months in advance. (Superbowl 2024, one air bnb operator stated that their units are booked for the Superbowl already, and they looking at a projected $8000 for the week, not to mention Mardi Gras, with will occur approximately the same time)

BC Live Performance Network has launched an advocacy campaign for the BC Fairs, Festivals, and Live Events (BCFFE) funding program, and we need your support! We offer our heartfelt sympathy to those impacted by forest fires, evacuations, extreme heat, smoke, and landslides, as well as to the communities and individuals. The challenges of producing live outdoor events make this advocacy campaign more important than ever in offering support and stability to those affected. About the BCFFE Established by the Province of BC in 2021, the BCFFE Fund was a one-time fund that was a lifeline for event organizations struggling to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic. In 2024, the fund was renewed at $15 million to address rising costs, decreased revenue and sponsorships, and increased expenses. The funds supported 1,172 organizations across 184 communities, making a significant impact. What we're asking for: 1. Establish the BCFFE as an annual fund with multi-year support 2. Reinstate funding to the 2023 level of $30 million per year 3. Administer the fund through a third party for equitable distribution Template Letters to make your own You will find two letter templates at this link. https://lnkd.in/grsE5u57 One for past fund recipients (could also be adapted by Arts Service Organizations). One for patrons of live events and festivals. Thanks for your support!

Our recent analysis of this year's Pride festival got us thinking about other annual events that draw crowds, particularly those that transform city streets into car-free places to celebrate, socialize, and do business. Odunde is the nation's largest African American street festival and has taken place in early June since 1975, centered on the intersection of 23rd and South. We used the same parameters in Placer.ai to understand if this year's festival on June 9 brought more people to the area than before, and found similarly encouraging results: attendance at this year's festival climbed 18% above 2023 totals, with 15,300 people staying at least 30 minutes within the festival area compared to 13,000 last year. Similar to Pride, Odunde draws its audience from across our region and even outside of it. Fewer than 1,000 of the attendees came from within Core Center City or its adjacent neighborhoods. 63% came from neighborhoods across Philadelphia, and more than 30% came from either the Philadelphia suburbs or locations outside of our region entirely. We're encouraged to see annual traditions drawing more and more attendees year-over-year to neighborhoods in and around Center City. Temporarily pedestrianizing streets is an effective strategy for drawing new and expanded audiences to particular corridors and districts while expanding economic opportunity for businesses in those areas. Perhaps most importantly, events like these remind people of how much fun cities can and should be as places with the ability to bring people together to celebrate, socialize, and shop. The tremendous crowds that both Pride and Odunde managed to attract from across and beyond our region are reminders that it's worth putting in the work to pull off big events.

RTE supported 178 arts and cultural events all over the island of Ireland in 2024. This represents an 82% increase over the ten years since the scheme was re-launched in 2014, when 98 events were supported by RTÉ. The renowned scheme – which won the Business to Arts Special Recognition Award in 2018 – also increased the number of supported events year-on-year, from 170 in 2023 to 178 in 2024. The RTÉ Supporting the Arts scheme aims to promote attendance at arts events nationwide, and supports the full range of genres, from dance to opera, visual arts to children’s events, literary festivals, film and Irish-language events. In 2023, RTÉ delivered a 30% increase year-on-year in the annual number of campaigns supporting Ireland’s rich and vibrant cultural landscape. The scheme offers dedicated promotion on RTÉ’s television, radio and digital services, and extensive support across RTÉ’s social channels. With production services provided by RTÉ, in addition to promotional airtime, the RTÉ Supporting the Arts scheme is a lifeline to Ireland’s creative and cultural sectors. Extending thanks to all my colleagues who make this happen (especiallly Joseph Hoban) and wishing continued success to all the arts organisations across the country who enrich our lives so much. #RTEsupportingthearts
Everyone tends to be "proud" and "delighted" on LinkedIn, but in this case, it's very true. RTÉ supported 178 arts and cultural events all over the island of Ireland in 2024. This massive increase did not happen accidentally. It is down to the sustained efforts of the RTÉ STA Committee and administrative team - past and present: Jenny Collins Maria Forde Carol De Buitlear Thomas Heeney Áine Fay Gillian O'Hea Morgan Casey Gail Henry Laura Beatty Mulligan Paul Derek O'Connor. The scale of the task - administration, production, and scheduling - is often daunting, but the return for our partners in the arts and cultural sector is material, and transformative. As Kevin Bakhurst says: "Artists not only deserve an audience, they need an audience. Ireland’s rich and vibrant arts and cultural sector can only thrive and grow if it is consumed – watched, read, listened to, participated in, and – crucially – attended. This is why the RTÉ Supporting the Arts scheme is so important. RTÉ allocates over €1million worth of promotional airtime each year to the arts, so that audiences all over Ireland can be informed about arts and cultural events near them, in every genre, and for everybody. I’d like to thank the RTÉ Supporting the Arts committee, and the teams in RTÉ’s commercial and promos divisions, for their steadfast support of the scheme, which has allowed it to grow so substantially and consistently. But most of all I’d like to thank the artists, the organisers, the national cultural institutions, the festivals, arts organisations and cultural bodies, whose incredible work we are so proud to support in ever increasing numbers.” https://lnkd.in/eVg6HD9f

The first event I did as a business, after leaving the world of music and festivals, was a street festival for a business group that wanted to revitalise its economy. They had a general plan of what they wanted to offer visitors and we set about bringing back a street fair to remind the neighbourhood of the great businesses on their doorstep. Since then I've done many community events and have learned 5 key components to a successful community event. Make sure you engage your WHOLE community. Be clear on your goal of your event and wear it like a shingle over the shop front. Community food before food trucks. Resist the temptation to book the high end (read expensive) entertainment. Make sure you contact your local Council and find out what rules and regulations you need to comply with. Community events are an amazing fabric of society and anyone can create one. If you are working on a community event, follow me for lots of event planning tips to help you along the way.

Festival Streets ++ [improving communities] Festival streets are temporary or permanent closures of certain streets or sections of streets to vehicular traffic, repurposing these areas for community gatherings, events, and festive activities. This approach is often integrated into urban design to enhance the vibrancy of public spaces and foster social interaction. Festival streets can accommodate a variety of events, such as fairs, festivals, outdoor dining, concerts, and art exhibitions, adapting to the needs of the community. -- Local businesses can benefit from increased foot traffic during events on festival streets, leading to higher sales and visibility.
