✍️𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬📈 Nowadays, I spend a good deal of time with EIC Accelerator matters and its balance of grant vs. equity. This balance reflects the crucial role of both public and private funding in deeptech investment strategies. Today, there is as much public funding available for deeptech ventures as there is private investment. Leveraging both effectively can significantly boost the sustainability and growth of deeptech startups, especially in their formative years. European deeptech startups are well aware of the EIC Accelerator's role in providing significant funding to drive innovation. What might be less understood is the variety of public funding: grants, subsidies, loans, tax incentives, and public procurement, all essential for early-stage R&D. Having participated in the investment and funding of many deeptech startups across various fields, I've seen firsthand how high-quality research validates innovations and enhances credibility with investors. Deeptech startups, known for their cutting-edge research, must leverage this strength to attract and secure funding. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 • Hybrid Funding Models: Combine public grants with private investment to reduce risks and maximize innovation potential. • Focus on High-Impact Research: Invest in startups with strong research capabilities and potential for high-impact innovations. • Explore Public Funding Opportunities: Encourage portfolio companies to seek and apply for public funding to support early stages and reduce financial burdens. Be aware that there is a variety of public funding: grants, subsidies, loans, tax incentives, and public procurement, all essential for early-stage R&D. • Collaborate with Public Entities: Foster collaborations to create a synergistic funding environment, for better resource allocation and support for innovative projects. Although VC is still not that well developed in Europe as in the US, I believe it’s good news that other players are trying to fill the gap. European top Universities are leading the way in creating investment funds and hopefully more will follow. I know this post is Swiss related but I'll go out on a limb and break some linkedin optics and maybe some of this will filter back to the people who need to see it. Great work on EIC but Does EIC; - Know who Nous-research are? - Know who Extropic are? - Know who cline are? No? These will be the most influential AI companies in the future, they are all US companies. Did they even approach them? - Does EIC actively chase founders to register and get visas? - Does EIC/Switzerland have direct and easy pathways for founders (EU + Third nationals) to get to Switzerland (100K-200K in equity company equity should give a fast track)? The US just got A16Z and the Paypal mafia in their government advisors. The US is only going to get more competitive and attractive to founders. The EIC page has too much noise, You should look at incubators (YC, A16Z, EWOR) They have simple forms, clear direction on how much was raised and given to whom. Where is the marketing outside of linkedin? x, Tiktok, Insta? focusing on SCALE is a problem, scaling existing ideas with PMF is too conservative. not 0 to 1 Founders don't need subsidies they are building in their own time, resources and in their parents garages. They need less friction.

European Innovation Council roadmap reveals new calls & updates to existing funds. The new 'Step' fund will help SMEs & small midcaps up-scale EU strategic tech with grant & €10-30M private investment. Accelerator is now restricted to max. €10M investor contribution via EIC SPV pool. Step 1 evaluations will have a c.4-6 week turnaround & step 2 require panel consensus to pitch, broadly aligned with present rules. A 'Pre-Accelerator' pilot, with cut-off Sep-25, will offer €300-500k to enhance technical & business maturity of SMEs from European 'widening' countries incl. Greece, Portugal, Estonia, Türkiye & others. The 15 widening countries collectively tapped less EIC funds than individual Western EU states like France, Germany, & Spain. This levels the field by prepping top SMEs from these areas for future Accelerator & Step projects. A 'hop-on' route will also help them join EU project consortia like Pathfinder & Pillar II projects.
