🌏 Just published: The State of the Ocean Report 2024 by UNESCO Ocean underscores the urgent need for action in safeguarding our ocean – a mission deeply resonant with Ocean Material's commitment to sustainability and marine conservation. Key findings include: 🌊 The rate of ocean warming doubled in 20 years and sea level rise doubled in 30 years. 🌊 Observations and research are falling short, leading to inadequate data. But as more states, industries, and organizations recognize the need to measure to protect marine ecosystems, data collection improves and new research topics emerge. 🌊 We need to accelerate the mobilization already under way in the hashtag #OceanDecade 🌊 We must transform ocean science and our relationship with it. 🌊 Better knowledge is essential for sustainable ocean planning and management, nationally and internationally. 🌊 A much stronger, faster, and more dynamic interaction is needed between ocean knowledge, policy, and action. It's World Ocean Day! 🌊 DYK? "After a long journey over multiple decades – and thanks to the High Seas Alliance, numerous other organizations, and key individuals’ efforts – in 2023, nations of the world agreed to protect the High Seas and its incredible biodiversity. The High Seas Treaty – also known as the BBNJ (Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction) Treaty – will be a legally binding agreement for conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity once ratified by 60+ countries. As UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated, the Treaty will be “crucial for addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.” And as Kristina Gjerde, Senior High Seas Advisor to the IUCN for more than 20 years, stated, “It’s an important moment for the ocean and humankind! The UN BBNJ Agreement gives new hope for multilateral solutions to global problems that no one nation can solve alone.” Once more than 60 nations ratify the treaty, we can celebrate a big step forward in protecting our world ocean. Among many Treaty benefits, once it’s ratified, countries will be able to work together to create marine protected areas in the High Seas; The Treaty sets out a new governance framework and clear process on how to establish MPAs; indeed, with the Treaty, the world’s nations agreed to designate 30% of the world’s international waters as protected areas by 2030. It’s an ambitious but attainable goal if we all work together to have our nations ratify the Treaty!" 🌊💙What is the Blue Manifesto? Last week was Ocean Week in Brussels 🌍—a vibrant week of debates, exhibitions, and events celebrating Europe’s seas 🌊 while exploring how we can restore their abundance. Also on the agenda, was the launch of the Blue Manifesto—a roadmap for a healthy ocean by 2030 🐋. This science-backed plan outlines clear steps to protect and restore marine ecosystems and called for an ambitious Ocean Deal, advocating for the ocean to be placed at the centre of EU decision-making during this new legislative period. The panel featured notable speakers such as Chalina Vicheva, Director General of DG MARE, and Virginijus Sinkevičius, former European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, now an MEP for the Greens/European Free Alliance 🌱. Representatives from Blue NGOs across Europe also enriched the discussion with their insights. OceanICU colleague, Maria Angel Hinestroza (SSBE), took the opportunity to share the OceanICU story and to engage with attendees, seen here with Riccardo Gambini (he/him) from BirdLife International, highlighting the importance of understanding ocean carbon in order to reach the ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2050! #OceanWeek #BlueManifesto #NetZero #Ocean #Carbon #EUParliament #Biodiversity #Research #EUGreenDeal #MissionOcean #climate ClientEarth Seas At Risk

World Ocean Day The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) released a State of the Ocean report earlier in the week pushing policymakers to think about “the ocean we need for the future we want.” The report detailed threats to the ocean and trends that could help identify drivers of change. It warned that the rate of ocean warming has doubled in 20 years and that coastal species are suffocating due to decreased oxygen levels in the ocean, among other things. One of its conclusions is that “ocean literacy practice and research is a strategic ally to optimize resources, accelerate behavioural change and improve the implementation of ocean conservation programmes and sustainability practices.” https://lnkd.in/dBmKM-Y9

Costa Rica and France are co-chairing the UNITED NATIONS OCEAN CONFERENCE UNOC3. This year Costa Rica organized the High Level event called "Immersed in Change" which took place in San José June 7th and 8th. There were many panels and side-events focusing on the Ocean protection and conservation in line with KMGBF target 3 and the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People which promotes the 30x30 commitment of restoring and protecting 30% of the marine environment and 30% of the terrestrial one. Costa Rica has already achieved both, 52% terrestrial and 30.5% marine so we have committed to 60% terrestrial or forest coverage by 2030. #costarica #nbs #ecosystemrestoration #marineconservation #worldoceansday https://lnkd.in/dgVFRUAq

World Oceans Day was first celebrated in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly after the United Nations Conference on #Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since then, the day has been observed annually on 8 June. The theme of World Oceans Day varies from year to year, but it generally focuses on a particular aspect of ocean conservation and the importance of protecting and preserving our oceans for future generations. Some past themes have included "Together we have the power to protect the Ocean" and "Blue Recovery: Together for a Healthy Ocean".Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, yet less than 5% of the #oceans have been explored by humans. #goproalpha #worldoceanday #technology #8thjune
