For over 15 years, I've had the honor of building entrepreneurial ecosystems across Arizona, and I’ve always admired the role libraries, local non-profits and economic developers play as accessible hubs of information, often the first stop for people embarking on new journeys. That’s why I’m excited to share the next iteration of Startup School—a flexible, community-embedded program designed to empower local leaders like you with the tools to support entrepreneurs. Last year, we gathered feedback from librarians, ecosystem builders, and entrepreneurs to refine the program. The result? A cutting-edge curriculum backed by ASU's brand of innovation that balances flexible, locally-embedded leadership with consistent, high-quality business education. Now, we’re piloting this enhanced version at our Downtown Phoenix community space—and I’d love for you to experience it firsthand! Over the next few weeks, we're beta testing the program, and your feedback could help shape the future of small business support in Arizona. 🌵 📅 Interested in partnering or attending a session? Join us at an upcoming Startup School event to see how this program can make a difference in your community. Together, we can empower entrepreneurs, drive innovation, and build stronger communities. Reach out if you'd like to attend or learn more! #Entrepreneurship #CommunitySupport #Innovation #Libraries #CityLeaders #SmallBusiness #StartupSchool #ASU #EdsonE+I #EconomicDevelopment

I had the opportunity to interview iKhokha's founders Matt Putman and Ramsay Daly last night - two really cool, but also humble individuals (read: fintech disruptors) who embrace their roles with optimism, tenacity and passion. Inspirational, motivational humans with an amazing story. Thank you Durban for showing up, connecting and helping to build a more vibrant local startup community. Here are a few takeaways from the fireside chat last night: 1. Authentic differentiation is important. Present a unique value proposition, that reflects your personal brand and which resonates with your unique target market. 2. Believe in your dreams and aspirations; manifesting what you believe in can lead to their realization. 3. Focus on your area of expertise. Outsource if you need to, to maintain high standards. 4. Build relationships and expand your network to forge impactful partnerships. 5. Hiring the right talent is key. There are three types of people in business; the pilots (those that lead with passion and optimism), the passengers (meet the minimum requirements but don't fully buy into the shared vision and goal) and the pirates (those that suck the energy out of the room). It is important to weed the pirates out at the onset. 6. Customer service is paramount. Look after your customer and use customer feedback data effectively to change, adapt and improve your offering. 7. Your culture is defined by the behaviors you tolerate. Uphold high standards. 8. Don't be afraid to hire people smarter or more knowledgeable than you. If you want to grow, you have to hire the right people. Attitude outweighs academics and a fancy qualification. 9. Share ideas openly to gather meaningful feedback, including from family and friends who offer candid perspectives. 10. Remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint. Entrepreneurship is a long-term endeavor; maintain resilience, innovation, and perseverance as you strive for success. Thank you iKhokha for sharing your story with us. We too now #believeinbetter. Startup Grind
From reminiscing about where it all began 12 years ago, to sharing invaluable insights gained through years of entrepreneurial grit, Matt and Ramsay delivered an honest account of what it takes to build a business at last night’s Startup Grind event. A big thank you to everyone who joined us at our iK HQ. Last night the message was clear; the journey of entrepreneurship never ends - let’s carry on sharing & learning from one another so we can all have a hand in building a better future.

🚀 Pitch-a-Kid This Saturday🌟 Are you looking for something fun to do with the kiddos? Do you like Shark Tank with a twist? The next Pitch-a-Kid event taking place this Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 10:00 am at the University of Texas, hosted by Texas Venture Labs! We are excited to announce that Nui will be participating! 💜 📆 Get your free tickets here: https://buff.ly/3JzdWgL Pitch-a-Kid is a unique event where real entrepreneurs have the opportunity to pitch their innovative company ideas to an audience of young, sharp-minded judges—kids! 🧒💡 It's like Shark Tank, but with a twist that's both educational and fun. Here's how it works: Kids are the judges, armed with scorecards to evaluate how well entrepreneurs communicate crucial aspects of their businesses, including the business model, value proposition, market research, vision, and team. If it doesn't make sense to a kid, it probably won't make sense to anyone else! 🤔 And free parking for parents! Woohoo! The Pitch-a-Kid event will be held in Crum Auditorium at Robert Rowling Hall (RRH 1.400). The address is 300 W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, RRH 1.400, Austin, TX 78712. Texas Venture Labs will gladly validate your parking in any UT parking garage…the nearest UT parking lots are Robert Rowling Hall and AT&T Hotel & Conference Center. Both garage entrances can be found on 20th Street between University Ave. and Guadalupe St. The Dobie garage is NOT a UT garage. We recommend planning 15 minutes to transit from the garage to the classroom, as some find the maze of elevators and hallways confusing. Don't miss this incredible opportunity to witness the future of innovation in action! 🌠 #PitchaKid #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #Education #TexasVentureLabs
