My story in embarking into the hospitality industry started off through a curiosity of wanting to know what the industry entailed. I knew early on that I felt a fulfillment when bringing joy to others, so I used that as a vessel to jump into my collegiate academic career in exploring a major of hospitality. That was a difficult journey, as other than knowing I wanted growth and wanted to make people happy, I did not have an established plan of what department or what my end goal really was. That was an experience that truly enriched me, as it was my first lesson in learning that plans change, interests develop, and everyone’s timeline in exploring different paths to find your goals is different and accepted. I jumped into event planning, and quickly realized that I craved something different. I gave myself the grace to stay in the program and explore different routes and other possibilities.
By doing so, I was able to land my first opportunity and my first Marriott hotel, the JW Marriott Anaheim Resort at the front desk. From there, I learned everything that I could regarding empowerment, making guest stays special, working in a collaborative environment, and understanding the impact that front office has for the total hotel. I took a leap of faith and jumped into the food and beverage world as an In-Room Dining server. That move wouldn’t have been possible with the support and relationships that I have held throughout my personal and professional career.
Matt Harrison was the first person to interview me for the role, the first person to believe in me, and to truly inspire me through what this company is all about. James Yokoyama, was my college advisor that encouraged me to keep going, never give up, and focus on a new perspective. Rhanda Richardson, her charisma has motivated me to continue to grow. Jocelin M. who has shared the passion of work ethic, care, and genuine friendship day in and day out. And lastly, Natalia R., the most admirable, vigilant leader to support me within my career.
Through this journey and these individuals, I was able to take away the following that shaped who I am –
1. Communicate with leadership. Share your aspirations, your sentiments, and your frustrations.
2. It’s not only important to fuel good relationships with guests, but with your colleagues too.
3. Take a moment to pause, reflect, and breathe. There are always more important things.
Through these lessons/take-aways, I was able to hit a milestone moment in my career, which was being a part of the Illumination Foundation fine-dining charity event. I worked alongside my leaders and my peers to see the magic that Marriott does to give back to the community, bring people together through a love of food, and utilize different skillsets in the service world. Through my story, I’ve learned that anything can be achieved through good communication, patience, pivoting and seeking more for yourself.
