Outokumpu is thrilled to have contributed to the creation of Tornado, a stunning 550-metre-long spiral staircase built by CIG Architecture in Groningen, now gracing the top of the Fenix Museum in Rotterdam. Designed by MAD Architects and finished this September, it ascends 30 metres through a former warehouse, clad in 297 panels crafted from approximately 400 tons of our high-performance Supra 316L/4404 stainless steel with a 2B finish. The cold-rolled and skin-passed 2B base material provided the perfect canvas for our client and fabricator CIG to work the piece to a mirror-polished finish, helping it to shine through even the most overcast Rotterdam day. The Tornado project will be a central piece of the Fenix Museum, the world's first dedicated to migration stories, set to open in 2025. We're excited to see our stainless steel play a part in bringing such a visionary design to life.
What an exciting new icon in architecture! 🤩 With its great symbiosis of existing and new creation, down-to-earthness and exciting spiral staircase, it is an absolutely worthy piece of architecure for such an important topic in human history. Congratulations to all being involved 👍
Congratulations to the amazing fabricational work by CIG on the stainless steel 👏
