🚨 New NCVER Data on Apprenticeships & Traineeships: Key Insights for the Future of Vocational Training in Australia 🚨 The latest report from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) highlights a notable decline in apprenticeships and traineeships across Australia, especially in non-trade occupations. While numbers are still above pre-pandemic levels, the data underscores a pressing need to support skill development in areas such as business disciplines—including human resources, marketing, and administration—as well as sectors like beauty, where we are currently upskilling beauticians to achieve their Diploma of Beauty Therapy. 🔹 Key Findings: Overall Decrease: As of March 2024, 351,695 apprentices and trainees were in-training, marking an 8.9% decrease from last year. Non-Trade Occupations Particularly Affected: Non-trade apprenticeships and traineeships, including roles in administration and clerical fields, saw a substantial drop of 21.3%. This is significant for businesses reliant on skilled administrative support. Gender Disparity Persists: Female participation has decreased by 14.8%, compared to a 6.6% drop for males, highlighting ongoing gender imbalances in training uptake. Positive Developments: Completions are up by 10.1%, and cancellations are down, showing progress in retaining apprentices and trainees once they begin their training journey. Apprenticeships and Traineeships - what are the space sectors needs? Let us know! The Space Industry Association of Australia is today launching a survey to determine what types of apprentices and trainees Australian space-related businesses need, and what some of the barriers are for them to hire apprentices and trainees. The data collected will help us better advocate for better systems and funding for businesses wishing to take on an apprentice or trainee to State and Federal Governments and to help the education sector understand the sectors unique needs. The survey is open to any business with tradings in Australia's space sector. The UK faces a severe shortage of skilled workers. The "Trade Skills Index 2023" revealed that nearly 937,000 new workers will be needed over the next decade, with 244,000 needing to be qualified apprentices to fill the growing skills gap. There are several challenges facing companies that hire apprentices in the UK: 📉 Falling numbers The number of new apprenticeships has been declining, particularly in young people and more deprived areas. ✍️Skills shortages Skills shortages are a major issue in the UK, with 36% of all job vacancies due to a lack of skills. 👫Fewer apprenticeship starts in 2022/23 Government figures show that apprenticeship starts for 2022/2023 fell by 3% on the previous academic year. The government has established Skills England, a national body that aims to improve training and apprenticeship opportunities. But if apprentices cannot travel to the job locations - what then? One of the most practical solutions is providing transport. This supports younger workers who do not drive or can’t afford to run their own car as well as businesses in rural or hard-to-reach areas. How about a monthly salary of over €4,800 for a job that doesn't require a university degree? That's what Germany's 10 best-paid apprenticeship sectors pay on average to skilled workers aged 20 to 39 – if they can fill the positions. A third of apprenticeship positions in Germany remained unfilled last year due to a lack of suitable applications, aggravating the country's shortage of skilled workers. Better pay alone won't solve the problem, according to the German Economic Institute's (IW) latest ranking of the country's 20 most lucrative job fields for apprentices. A revamp of secondary school kids' career guidance, attracting foreign trainees and upskilling workers are among the measures IW's experts recommend to close the country's apprenticeship gap. The employment rate of 20- to 34-year-olds with a vocational degree in Germany was 93.3% in 2022, compared to the EU's 81% in 2023 – up from 76% in 2015. The Government now Pays you to Keep Interns in your Company... I've been reading about the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE)... and this scheme has two core financial benefits: 👉🏼 1. Government reimbursing 25% of prescribed stipend back to the employer, subject to a maximum of Rs. 1500/- per month per apprentice; and 👉🏼 2. Reimbursement of basic training cost up to a maximum of Rs. 7,500 per apprentice calculated as Rs 15 per hour for up to a maximum of 500 hours... Such Basic Training usually is 20-25% of the duration of the overall Apprenticeship Programme However, the Stipend needs to be a minimum of 70% in the first year, 80% in the second year, and 90% in the third year of minimum wages in the semi-skilled category in the concerned state... Plus, the apprentice must have an Aadhaar Card. So, if the Minimum Wage in your state is Rs 17,000 then the stipend should be Rs 11900 (Y1), Rs 13600 (Y2) and Rs 15300 (Y3) out of which you get back Rs 1500 per month from the government, so final cost turns out to be Rs 10400 (Y1), Rs 12100 (Y2) and Rs 13800 (Y3). An online portal at www <dot> apprenticeshipindia <dot> gov <dot> in has been set up to administer the entire process online, and full user guides on how to register as an Establishment, hire listed apprentices, and make payroll to them are given. All Establishments having a workforce (regular and contract employees) of 30 or more are mandated to undertake Apprenticeship Programs in a range from 2.5% -15% of its workforce (including contractual employees) every year. While I've never hired interns through under this scheme, I'm really intrigued to check this out and register just to see how the government is administering this.
