For Lunar New Year, we are featuring Ning (Becky) Cai, who has been with us for five years now. We asked Ning to share her favorite Lunar New Year foods and tradition. "My favorite food to eat for Chinese New Year is dumplings, which are a traditional Chinese delicacy especially during festivals. Since the shape of Chinese dumplings is similar to ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots, they symbolize wealth. On New Year's Eve, the family makes dumplings together, which means reunion. The spring festival is the most important holiday in China. The meaning of the spring festival is important for everyone. It’s not only a time to celebrate family reunion, but also a time for us to reflect on the past year and look forward to the new year, and also represents the inheritance and development of Chinese traditional culture." Thank you for sharing your culture with us, Ning. If you have a favorite New Year tradition or food, please share below. #LunarNewYear #EurestNationalAccounts Eurest USA Compass Group USA

Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead! Dumpling Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival or Duanwu Festival, is a day celebrated according to Chinese tradition, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The exact date varies from year to year, this year, it falls on June 10th. Qu Yuan, a revered poet and statesman during China's Warring States period (around 475-221 BC), is said to have thrown himself into the Miluo River, heartbroken by corruption and the fall of his state. There are two main stories associated with the origin of the rice dumplings (zongzi) eaten during the festival: 1) Villagers rushed out in boats to try and save Qu Yuan, but were unsuccessful. As a way to honor him and prevent fish from eating his body, they threw packets of rice wrapped in leaves into the river. These are believed to be the inspiration for the traditional zongzi. 2) Some believe that admirers of Qu Yuan threw food into the river to nourish his spirit after his death. The traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to commemorate him. His patriotic influence has left its mark on many subsequent generations in China and beyond. The tradition of eating zongzi became associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. This festival is a vibrant celebration with races featuring elaborately decorated dragon boats, a testament to the villagers' efforts to save Qu Yuan. It's also a time for families to gather, enjoy delicious food, and remember the importance of patriotism and integrity.😊 #AnyaTan #RedesignRetirement #Connector

Gong hei fat choy! 恭喜发财 Gong xi fa cai! 新年好 I read once that the #LunarNewYear parade in #SanFrancisco is the largest outside of Asia. The tween girl standing next to me at this year's parade thinks it's the largest in the world. It was pretty spectacular this year! The video below is the finale. Those firecrackers were loud!!!! Fun facts from the tween's grandmother: 🧨Firecrackers expel bad luck from the previous year to start the new year off right. 🧧That chubby, smiling figure with a curly mustache that you might see around New Years? He brings good fortune for the new year. That's why he's often surrounded by money! How does your city celebrate the New Year? PS. According to the China tourism website I consulted, the first greeting is Cantonese; the second is Mandarin. The Cantonese greeting translates to English as "Wishing you happiness and prosperity." The Mandarin greeting translates as "New Year Goodness" or "Good New Year." Both are informal greetings used with family and friends. There are different phrases for formal greetings. #CommunityOrganizing #OrganizingToWin Captions auto-generated. There is music and firecrackers throughout the video.

🌸 **Exploring 清明节 (Qīngmíng Jié) - The Chinese Tomb-Sweeping Festival** 🌸 Step into the serene world of 清明节, where tradition meets reverence in a beautiful tapestry of remembrance. Originating over two millennia ago, this cherished Chinese festival, also known as the Tomb-Sweeping Festival, holds a special place in the hearts of millions, embodying the essence of filial piety and cultural heritage. At its core, 清明节 is a time for families to pay homage to their ancestors, tending to their graves with meticulous care and heartfelt prayers. This act of tomb-sweeping symbolizes not only respect for those who came before but also a deep-rooted connection to one's lineage and the values they imparted. Yet, 清明节 is more than just solemn rituals; it's a celebration of life and the vibrant renewal of nature that comes with the arrival of spring. As families gather amidst the blossoming landscapes, laughter mingles with tears, and stories of generations past are shared, fostering bonds that transcend time and space. From the bustling cities to the tranquil countryside, 清明节 paints a picture of unity and continuity, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. Whether through the time-honored practices of tomb-sweeping or the joyous festivities of kite-flying and picnicking, the spirit of 清明节 resonates deeply, reminding us of the importance of honoring our roots while embracing the beauty of the present. So, as 清明节 approaches, let us pause to reflect on the legacy of our ancestors, to cherish the memories they left behind, and to embrace the profound wisdom embedded in this timeless tradition. In doing so, we honor not only the past but also pave the way for a future imbued with reverence, resilience, and a profound sense of belonging.

Before the Asia Fruit fair that kicks off on Wednesday 4th of September I visited Man Mo temple downtown buzzing Hong Kong. After my many years that I lived in Asia I have always been facinated by the fruit symbols. The orange is a prayer or wish for good fortune. That is why it is probably the most common food offering. As a harbinger of wishes for good luck, they are often eaten on the second day of the New Year. Why not the first, because once an Emperor distributed oranges to his officials on the second day of the New Year. Thus you are also wishing for officialdom if you eat them on this day. The mandarin and other fruits in the citrus family have other interesting roles. For instance, after her wedding, the bride is given two of these fruits by her new in-laws. She is to peel them the evening of the nuptials and share them with her husband. These two fruits are symbolizing a family wish that the bride and groom share a happy and full life together. Also, the name of the mandarin in Cantonese also means gold, clearly a dual wish here adding hopes for a life loaded with prosperity. Apples have meaning, too. They symbolize peace. The word for apple in Chinese is ping, the homonym of ping is peace. Should you wonder what a homonym is, think of the word bear, the big four-legged animal and then think bear as in to bear fruit. Now the blossom of the apple is different; it stands for beauty. If you see one in a picture along with magnolias, the meaning is a hope that your house be honored and rich (with beauty). #asiafruit #symbols #freshfruit #globalproduce #manmotemple #hongkong #china #apple #orange #mandarin #prayers #asiafruitlogistica #usa #singapore #malaysia #peace #prosperity #fortune #middleeast #fruitbusiness #teamworkmakesthedreamwork
