Astute climbers, however, will tell you that there is one thing that is more important viz. *the discipline to ______.* *Lack of this practice has cost many a climber their life.* This is stressed upon many times in the John Krakauer book *X* about the *1996 Mt Everest tragedy* wherein 8 people died on a single day and 12 people in that climbing season (of May 1996). The 2015 film *Everest* also stresses on this discipline. In 1996, *John Krakauer* wrote another book *Y* about the events surrounding the strange life and death of *Chris* *McCandless* The book *Y* was adapted to a *film of the same name* in 2007, directed by Sean Penn with Emile Hirsch starring as McCandless. *What discipline* (as discussed above) ? *What books are X and Y ?*

“A butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil can cause a tornado in Texas.” This claim may seem implausible on the surface, but it exhibits the great truth that seemingly insignificant actions can have profound consequences on our lives and on humanity as a whole. The “butterfly effect” is a component of chaos theory and has been associated with the work of Edward Lorenz, a mathematician and meteorologist who discovered the phenomenon in the 1960s while running a weather simulation on a computer. Applying the butterfly effect to our personal lives, we may observe how seemingly inconsequential decisions we have made have cumulatively shaped our destiny. I have provided the example of how one person choosing to enter a specific subway car on a given day may result in a series of events that can change the course of history. I have discussed this topic in relation to a passage from the book, Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior, by the psychiatrist and spiritual teacher David Hawkins, MD, PhD, which I read in August of this year. Looking back on the events of your life in totality, you will see how the butterfly effect has brought you to where you are at this very moment. 🌌
