Loss of Gloss problem in clear coats and couple of thoughts from CHEMCO lab. As time passes, the gloss of a clear coat naturally diminishes. Factors like erosion, degradation, abrasion, and scratching contribute to a gradual decline in gloss over time. The primary objective when a producer formulates a clear coat is to slow down this process to maintain the pristine appearance of a new car for as long as possible. The ability to retain gloss varies depending on the coating technology chosen in a particular formula. Presently, acrylic-melamine coatings appear to be the most effective due to their combination of  - scratch resistance,  - UV transparency, and  - overall durability. However, attempts to enhance gloss and gloss retention by increasing melamine levels or crosslink density have often resulted in unintended consequences such as  -> chipping, cracking, or even etching. Furthermore, while UV absorbers can reduce the photodegradation of any coating, their effectiveness in protecting the surface of a film is significantly lower compared to lower parts of a car. This is because there's minimal UVA exposure at the surface, leading to little to no absorption by the additive. Consequently, more UV radiation is left to be absorbed by the polymer, potentially accelerating degradation. 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐈 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠: Also known as chromic acid anodizing, it's thin and primarily used for improving paint adhesion or corrosion resistance. Type I is less common due to the toxicity of chromic acid. 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐈𝐈 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠: This is the most common form, utilizing sulfuric acid. It creates thicker coatings for enhanced wear resistance, color dyeing, and electrical insulation. 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐈𝐈𝐈 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠: Also known as hard anodizing, it employs a more concentrated sulfuric acid solution and higher voltages. Asset owners benefit greatly from corrosion resistance enhancements. Applicators benefit from rapid dry time, and exceptional spread rates. I often recommend these products to shops looking make throughput gains. If you are using 2-coat or 3-coat protective coating specifications you t’s very likely the new Macropoxy 4600 and/or Macropoxy 2600 will drop in nicely and deliver added benefits. In many cases you’ll reduce VOC’s as well.
