As one step towards ensuring that there is speedy justice involving Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases, Oxfam in Malawi and Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children are working with the magistrate courts and Police in Phalombe and Balaka districts, Malawi, in facilitating mobile courts that take justice close to the people. The initiative which is being funded by Oxfam Hong Kong enables remote communities to access court justice without facing the financial burdens they often do when traveling long distances to access district designated courtrooms. This video highlights one of the sessions held early this year in Phalombe district where His Worship Leonard Mtosa, First Grade Magistrate for Phalombe Magistrate court facilitated a mobile court session and heard five cases in which four were sexual harassment offences involving minors. #16DaysofActivism #NotoGBV #Justice4All https://lnkd.in/dZUEeKqm

In the forthcoming days, I will be seeking Presidential intervention to tackle Police Brutality and Civilian Hostility and reinforce community policing reforms. Unfortunately, the Nigerian government has not yet actualized substantial police reforms, leaving young people fearful of leaving their homes due to the risks of torture, extortion, harassment, and unjustified killings. Similarly, citizen-police hostility is on the increase, resulting from negative experiences between Nigerians and law enforcement agencies. It has fostered deep-seated distrust, leading to intensified animosity against the police. Punishments serve five purposes: detention, deterrence (setting social norms), retribution, restitution, and rehabilitation. Many educators hyper-focus on the last one and conclude that punishment serves no purpose. Balancing the needs of the individual and the community is THE human dilemma. #PLCatWork

It's been a challenging week, and as a frontline consultant, I am constantly reassuring and advocating on issues where the government continues to fall short. The recent swift action by the judiciary system to imprison rioters when some serious abusers are allowed to roam free raises some questions about the effectiveness of our judicial system when it comes to protecting mothers and children. #domesticabuse #stalkingandharassment #prison #familycourts #genderbasedviolence https://lnkd.in/eWciJVqa

Corporal punishment remains the most common and widely accepted form of violence against children, often occurring in various settings, including penal systems. Despite progress towards universal abolition—with 66 countries banning it in all settings and 27 more committed to full prohibition—many children worldwide are still left behind. This latest briefing from End Corporal Punishment highlights the urgent need to end legally sanctioned violence against children in justice systems to ensure every child's right to a violence-free childhood. On this World Day for International Justice, we highlight the significant 70% budget cut to the National Mission for Justice Delivery, affecting e-Courts. The Gram Nyayalayas Act, intended to provide local justice, has only 276 out of 2,500 operational courts but has been extended to 2026 with a Rs 50 crore budget. NALSA's funding increased by 17% to Rs 170 crore to improve justice access. Despite a Rs 1.2 lakh crore budget for the police force, modernization funds remain largely unused. The prison modernization initiative was reintroduced with a Rs 400 crore allocation. Women’s safety schemes, particularly the Safe City Project, received increased funding within the gender budget. https://lnkd.in/gi4xk4EM #InternationalJustice #Justice #ECourts #Budget #JusticeReform #GramNyayalay #NALSA #Police #PrisonReform #WomensSafety #JusticeFunding #Indiaspend
