Housing has the most direct impact on people’s health and livelihoods🏡 In low-income countries, 64% of urban dwellers live in slums. By 2050, over 200 million climate migrants are expected to move to urban areas, who often settle in informal settlements, while seeking jobs. Adequate housing and urban services may be a fiscal challenge, but it also provides opportunities for a just, climate-friendly transition that can help achieve sustainable development goals when done right. “They are not the soft, fluffy side of economic development. We want to see them mainstreamed as a key part of driving forward a more prosperous Scotland.” We welcome employment and investment minister Tom Arthur's commitment, made during portfolio questions on Wednesday, to progressing the recommendations in EDAS chair Neil McInroy’s review of inclusive and democratic business models. In his independent review of inclusive and democratic business models, Neil McInroy made seventeen recommendations on how to scale social enterprises, employee-owned businesses and co-operatives in Scotland. In our report on Community Wealth Building, Future Economy Scotland co-director Miriam Brett outlined how enlarging inclusive and democratic business models’ share of the economy will support a wide range of intertwined goals related to climate, environmental and economic justice. The era of a new government always feels like a chance for a fresh start. To fix what is wrong and to create new optimism. But optimism is nothing without delivery, and we know this can't be about doing things how we used to do it or relying on government bodies alone to fix it all for us. The system is broken. So, as Evie John eloquently lays out below, this is our chance..."to take a whole-system approach, with bravery, imagination and collaboration from all of us – institutions, businesses and communities alike." And there are many very practical and achievable first steps to doing so. Inner Circle Consulting #missiongrowth #devolution #longtermplan
Thank you to the TheMJ for asking me to share my thoughts about what growth really means from a place perspective at such an important moment. I’m as excited as everyone in my LinkedIn bubble about the possibilities of the new government’s first priority. However, we need more than standardised national frameworks for growth issued from Whitehall (albeit with the best of intentions). We need to seize this moment to design the inclusive, sustainable, long-term growth that all our communities deserve or continue to face the democratic, social, and financial costs of rising inequality. #missiongrowth #devolution #longtermplan https://lnkd.in/dQH52eWi

#ConnectedCommunities from #CommunityWealthBuilding In a world facing increasing challenges of loneliness, poverty, and homelessness, Community Wealth Building (CWB) emerges as a beacon of hope, driving transformative change for both people and the planet. What is Community Wealth Building? CWB is an economic development strategy that focuses on localising wealth, empowering communities, and fostering inclusive wellbeing. By redirecting resources and opportunities to local economies, we build stronger, more resilient communities. CLES - Our Local Economic Future About the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) Established in 1986, CLES is a Manchester-based charity working towards a future where local economies benefit people, place and the planet. This will happen when wealth and power serve local people, rather than the other way around, enabling communities to flourish. We have an international reputation for our pioneering work on community wealth building and are recognised as the curators of the movement in the UK. We act as a critical friend to local economies, by working with the economic actors in places to bring them together, connect them to progressive agendas, devise solutions and deliver change. This practice-based research also enables us to advocate for change to national debates and to stimulate governments of all scales to enable local economies to reach their full potential. https://lnkd.in/eEEXkHwH
