“We used EUROFLO® for our Lyttelton Tunnel project, a critical infrastructure project given the tunnel is a vital transport artery for Christchurch. We placed 2000m of EUROFLO® 315mm OD pipe. It was very easy to install as long as they were all facing the right direction when taken into the tunnel on our hi-rail truck. Over the first two-day block of time we put in 500m of pipe as there was a bit of learning for all of the team. The pipes were installed with rodding eyes every 100m or so and wrapped in bidim. Over the second two-day block of time we put in 1500m of pipe. Large bore SN8 EUROFLO® pipes are steel reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) and have an extremely high mechanical strength coupled with low weight in comparison to other marketed pipes. Have you thought about what happens in practice when we submerge a tunnel element? When the elements are lowered to the seabed, it is the culmination of several weeks of preparation. A standard element weighs 73,500 tonnes and is 217 meters long. Therefore, the immersion requires a specially built vessel that can place the element with a few millimetres of precision on the seabed. It is dark on the seabed, so the crew on the ship uses special sensors on the element and the seabed that precisely show the tunnel's location and orientation second by second.
