⭐ Celebrating a Decade of Growth and Innovation with P2SAC ⭐ Reflecting on the incredible journey of the Purdue Process Safety & Assurance Center (P2SAC) over the past decade, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come since that first meeting in a small conference room with just four companies. Today, we proudly collaborate with over 20 company sponsors from diverse industries, including oil & gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and consulting firms. The financial support from these sponsors funds PhD student stipends for research in process safety, ensuring that our brightest minds can focus on solving real-world problems. Additionally, undergraduate and Masters students gain valuable experience and course credits through projects selected and mentored by our industry partners. The impact of this collaboration is profound. We’re not just advancing research; we are also equipping the next generation of engineers with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in their careers. This symbiotic relationship between academia and industry is the cornerstone of our success, driving innovation and fostering a culture of safety. At P2SAC, we're committed to learning from the past to prevent future incidents. One of our pivotal on-going capstone projects for Summer 2024 is: Learnings From Global Process Safety Incidents and Their Prevention: This project involves a comprehensive analysis of approximately 300 global major process safety incidents, examining data such as date, location, industry type, fatalities, damage, and root causes. By building a detailed database of incident investigations, we aim to derive actionable insights to enhance safety protocols and prevent future occurrences. This comprehensive analysis will hopefully contribute to the development of best practices and standards in process safety.  P2SAC has published several papers in this area including: ‘Process Safety Incidents Across Fourteen Industries’, Process Safety Progress, April 2020. Our work is essential in driving process safety improvements across industries. P2SAC serves as a hub for conducting fundamental research and providing expertise in process safety-related standards and best practices. As a young engineer, I had the privilege of working with renowned gas companies like BOC, Air Liquide, and Linde, where the emphasis on behavioral safety was paramount. We were trained in LeadSafe techniques, modeled after the DuPont STOP (DSS+ STOP) program, and also learned from case studies like the OPCAL Piper Alpha accident (1988), which starkly highlighted the importance of considering human factors in safety management. These experiences shaped my understanding of the critical role human factors play in safety. With OCIMF (Oil Companies International Marine Forum) SIRE 2.0, which emphasizes human factors, scheduled to go live soon, Professor Patrick Hudson's Hudson Safety Ladder framework is a good starting point for shipping organizations to understand the different stages of safety maturity and to assess their organizations. This framework explains the different stages of organizational safety maturity, from a pathological approach to a generative state, aiming for world-class safety standards. Last week I presented “Improving Integration between Process Safety and Functional Safety” at the TEES Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center-TAMU conference in College Station, Texas.
