Not a day passes without some pronouncements on the death of permanent jobs. This is worrying. But also signals possibilities. We experienced this personally in Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC). With digitalisation of our services, many jobs were eliminated. Some jobs were redesigned, retaining some previous functions combined with new ones. More than a few colleagues took up new roles as mentors where they designed and implemented programmes directly in schools for our low income students. Departments, the mainstay of organisations, also may gradually fade into background. In place are teams made up of people with diverse competencies. This may be what beneficiary-centric, mission driven organisations like CDAC need to go. We build our competences around beneficiary needs and organise around teams. Departments may stay but not in the same way as before. In charting a competency based organisation where learning & development, performance review, and career development revolves around it, we have much to think about.
