Honoring Veterans on Veterans Day Today, we take a moment to honor the dedication and sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in our armed forces. Here are a few unique facts that remind us of the incredible contributions of our veterans: 📅 A Legacy of Service: Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" in 1919, marking the end of WWI. By 1954, it became the Veterans Day we know today, a time to honor veterans of all conflicts. 👩💼 Leaders and Problem-Solvers: Did you know? Veterans make up 10% of all U.S. business owners. Their leadership skills and work ethic often translate into successful ventures that benefit communities across the nation. 🌍 Continued Dedication to Service: Veterans remain active in their communities after active duty. Statistics show that veterans are 30% more likely to volunteer, proving that their commitment to helping others never fades. 🕰️ Continuous Vigilance: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery has been guarded continuously since 1937, a powerful symbol of commitment and respect. Today, let's celebrate and thank our veterans for their bravery, integrity, and dedication, which inspire us all. #VeteransDay #HonoringService #Gratitude

3 Veterans Day facts: 🇺🇸 Armistice Day was the original name of Veterans Day. It was called this because it represented the first anniversary of a cessation between Germany and the Allied Nations in World War I. 🇺🇸 The armistice began in 1918, in the eleventh month, on the eleventh day, at the eleventh hour. However, it does not signify the actual end of World War I. It merely represents the start of the end. 🇺🇸 Originally, Veterans Day was not intended to take place every year. It was not until 1926 that Congress determined it should be a yearly occurrence. Today and every day, we salute our brave men and women serving worldwide. Your courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to our freedom inspire us all. #VeteransDay #veterans #america #americansoldier #TributeToOurHeroes #AmericanHeroes #thankyouforyourservice

Thank you to all of the veterans who chose to put on a uniform and serve your country. You made a choice, and a sacrifice, because you felt that our great nation required it. Some fun statistics about veterans in the U.S.; 1. In 2022 there were 16,200,000 veterans in the U.S, 6.2% of population (down from 25M in 1990). 2. The poverty rate for veterans is about 7.5%, which is lower than the national average of ~12% (a good news story). 3. Alaska was the state with the highest % of veterans in 2022 at 10.1%, with NY and DC the lowest at 3.7% and 4%, respectively. 4. Texas has the highest number of veterans at 1.4M. 5. By 2045 the number of veterans is predicted to decrease to 12M (we'll be even more elite!). 6. The share of employed veterans who are government workers is 22.8%. 7. And finally, thank you to our WWII and Korean war vets, since 42% of males 75 years and older are veterans!

MONDAY MINUTE: Happy Veterans Day Veteran’s Day is set aside to celebrate and acknowledge those who have served this country. As I reflect on the service of some of my family members, I want to remind you of a few ways you can celebrate this day: 📌Volunteer at a VA Hospital or Veterans Center Spending time with veterans in hospitals or community centers is a great way to give back. Some centers welcome volunteers to read, play games, or simply offer companionship. 📌 Participate in a Moment of Silence or Ceremony Observing a moment of silence at 11 a.m. honors veterans' sacrifices. You could also attend or organize a flag-raising ceremony to show respect for those who have served. 📌Send Care Packages or Letters to Active Military Members Organizations like Operation Gratitude and Soldiers’ Angels help civilians send care packages and letters to deployed service members. This small gesture can significantly impact morale. How do you plan to celebrate or honor veterans today? 📣 A special thank you to my dad, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, sister-in-law, uncle, and cousins for their service. #MondayMinute #MondayMotivation #VeteransDay #VeteransDay2024

For this Veterans Day, we asked fellow members of the WorkSource Georgia team to answer the question, "What does Veteran's Day mean to me?". In the coming days we will be highlighting some of their stories and insights from those that served and those that know someone that served. "To me, Veterans Day stands as the second most significant federal holiday, right after Memorial Day. While Memorial Day solemnly honors the service members who gave their lives for our country, Veterans Day is dedicated to celebrating those who have served and continue to enrich our lives. Although these brave individuals have made it home, many have not emerged from their experiences entirely unscathed. Veterans share common experiences unique to military life; however, each individual’s journey is distinct. Some carry visible reminders of their service, while others bear the weight of mental scars, and many endure a combination of both. On Veterans Day, communities across the United States come together to express their gratitude in various ways, such as hosting parades and other local events. Many businesses join in by displaying messages of thanks or offering discounts to veterans. Some communities even organize initiatives aimed at providing essential resources and services for veterans in need. Additionally, Veterans Day serves as an important reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by many veterans who have not yet received the support they deserve and need. For me, Veterans Day holds profound meaning, as it not only fosters appreciation but also promotes the well-being of those who have bravely served our nation." - Bryndan Chaney, OWD JVSG team member #worksourcegeorgia #worksourcega #worksourcevets #veteransday2024 #veteransday #veterans #georgiaveterans #georgiavets #jvsg
