Last week, I was lucky to attend the SCS Formulate conference in Coventry, which is quite fitting given the spend per capita on cosmetic products is higher in Coventry than anywhere else in the UK! As well as a wide range of exhibitors there was a great roster of speakers covering informative topics around policy and trends as well as inspirational talks on novel approaches to ingredients from Seaweed to Ketchup. I was encouraged to find that the University of Edinburgh are well placed to assist in addressing some of the key challenges coming out of conversations: Greener Formulations: As we move away from petrochemicals and other 'nasties' challenges arise from batch consistency, viscosity and shelf life. ECFP are well placed to respond to these challenges (https://lnkd.in/eCkcEgT6). Sustainable Packaging: With only 9% of cosmetic packaging being recycled a move to more sustainable materials is high on the agenda. The University of Edinburgh are currently working on a range of biopolymers for this very purpose. Scale Up: Smaller businesses making the step up from cottage industry face scaling challenges where a need to switch sources of raw materials can result in a variation in finished product. Edinburgh has a vast range of facilities and equipment we can use to characterise those materials and the expertise to interpret them to provide solutions. In the era of Industry 4.0, enabling packaging machines to be more adaptive to varying product types and reducing changeover times is not just a competitive advantage but a necessity for manufacturers looking to streamline operations increase capacity. Rotzinger Pharma Packaging, a leading provider of packaging machinery, was asked by a prominent food manufacturer to develop an adaptive secondary food packaging machine. This machine needed to meet high throughput demands and support multiple package and product variations on a single platform. By integrating CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless technology into their multi-carrier machinery, Rotzinger achieved new advanced capabilities. These included performing actions on products while in constant high-speed motion, and maximizing flexibility, throughput, & sustainability.
