Housing diversity in every neighbourhood. Yes, please! Sacramento City Council has unanimously adopted the Missing Middle Housing Interim Ordinance, becoming the first in California to allow multi-unit housing in all single-family neighbourhoods. It allows four-plexes, six-plexes, eight-plexes, ten-plexes cottage/bungalow courts, small homes on small lots and more, with the size of the building determined by the lot size and proximity to public transit. Core principles of the planning reform are:- neighbourhood scale (enabling them to blend well into existing residential neighbourhoods), trees and open space (as incentives to advance climate goals) and attainability and ownership (promoting the creation of new entry-level home ownership opportunities). Well done California YIMBY for never giving up YIMBY Qld #abundanthousing #housingforall #urbanplanning https://lnkd.in/gyq6CT54

While some DC neighborhoods have made great progress in building more housing, there's still more work to be done in the region. "Out of all local jurisdictions, only D.C., Alexandria, Arlington County, and Falls Church were on track to meet their share of the 320,000 new homes needed to be built in the DMV over the next decade, per the study." The DMV has the benefit of being fairly well connected by a series of metro lines. Transit-oriented development would go a long way in continuing to address the lack of available housing and sustainable development. #urbanplanning #housing

Is Sacramento on the verge of the housing breakthrough that the entire state has been waiting for? This Tuesday, the Sacramento City Council announced a forward-thinking 2040 general plan designed to significantly increase housing development near transit areas and within our neighborhoods, while also aiming to reduce our reliance on cars. Here’s what this means for our housing crisis: Increased Housing Supply Affordability at the Forefront Creating a Sustainable and Welcoming City This collaborative initiative seems to tackle our housing shortage head on with innovative, inclusive, and sustainable strategies positioning Sacramento to serve as a model for other cities in California facing similar issues. I'm always excited about forward change -- especially when it involves being the first, or trailblazing. Has the city gone far enough with this updated plan to affect our path towards more accessible homeownership and a sustainable future for Sacramento? I think it's a great start. #generalplan #Sacramento #growth #FARratio #ADUs #accessorydwellingunits

#NPC24 host city Minneapolis was leading the nation in zoning reform and increasing its housing supply faster than any city in the Midwest thanks to the groundbreaking reforms advanced through its 20-year comprehensive plan—Minneapolis 2040, but recent litigation put that progress on hold. Planning is THE best way to increase housing supply while balancing the interests of all residents. As President of the @AmericanPlanningAssociation, I call on the Minnesota Legislature to lead again by moving this session to protect the 2040 Plan and support planning-led efforts statewide to produce more housing — not add additional barriers. If the state legislature fails to protect the 2040 Plan, communities will avoid taking bold planning action to support the growth that's already happening in cities and towns across Minnesota, adding to the state's growing housing deficit. It could even disincentivize communities from using planning as a tool for growth — one that's been proven to improve housing opportunities in communities across the country. https://lnkd.in/gMBrRqrC

You know you’re in the heart of a city that cares when a long-standing DMV site transforms into a vibrant, affordable housing complex! 🏠✨ Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to redevelop the 1377 Fell St. location into a mixed-use complex featuring 372 affordable housing units alongside a modern DMV office. This project aims to provide homes for residents earning 30% to 80% of the area’s median income, making strides toward addressing the city’s housing crisis. Scheduled for completion by August 2030, this development enhances the community and sets a precedent for utilizing state-owned land to create essential housing solutions. 💬 What do you think about this initiative? Important to reiterate this part of his post: "An under-appreciated part of this success: the 2016 Zoning Update that made it so much easier to expand housing choices, in large part through significant reductions (or in Downtown, elimination) of parking requirements." You can either build housing for cars or housing for people. You can't efficiently or affordably accomplish both.
A huge accomplishment for DC, and a challenge to our neighboring jurisdictions in the region who could be doing more to meet our shared responsibility to make housing attainable for everyone. An under-appreciated part of this success: the 2016 Zoning Update that made it so much easier to expand housing choices, in large part through significant reductions (or in Downtown, elimination) of parking requirements.

“What was once a pleasant place to live is now becoming a nightmare.” This was one of many quotes from local residents at a recent meeting of the St. Johns County (Florida) Planning and Zoning commission. Sadly, extreme comments like these are increasingly common when communities seek to block affordable housing proposals. Fortunately, some of these same communities also have voices of reason. A recent op-ed published by Jacksonville Today is a great example. It’s a balanced piece that lays out the county’s growth-related challenges and outlines how Dominium’s proposed development – Preserve at Wards Creek – can help with both housing and infrastructure needs. But don’t take our word for it. Read the story for yourself. In the meantime, we’ll continue fighting to bring affordable housing to the communities, families, first responders, teachers and seniors who need it most. https://lnkd.in/g9Hqadk6 #affordablehousing #floridahousing #floridarealestate #workingtomakeadifference #whatwedohitsHOME #stjohnscounty

1wThanks for sharing this insightful article. I have lived in Fort Worth for over 20 years and was a city employee for three of them. I agree that zoning law changes would open up affordable housing. I am curious how other cities have overcome the staffing capacity to monitor and maintain this new tooling and procedures to create a robust system. I am also curious how these cities have overcome community pushback against shared housing. I know my own HOA does not allow this and when it is proposed the community takes aggressive steps to oppose the idea.
