Laurie Ruettimann and I have been digging into #performancemanagement for a while now. The biggest surprise from our research was that many HR organizations are seriously overestimating the effectiveness of their existing programs. When we compared impact of those at the top of their game in PM with those in the middle... there was a huge gap. But what's a girl to do?? Why haven't we cracked the code after decades of better practices and big ideas? I think a big part of it is that HR is thinking about it the wrong way: We're more focused on management and less mindful of enablement. The former is prone to "good enough" mindsets whereas the latter takes a more active approach of continuous improvement. I'm inspired to see more solution providers in the industry catching on to the power of enablement in performance, and I had a sneak peek at Bonusly's new offering. Makes my nerdy heart warm to see more of these types of tools operating at the intersection of manager 1:1s and employee recognition. I think there's something about these two pieces of work culture that organically enrich performance management programs. We'll be publishing our white paper on what we're calling Performance Intelligence soon. Until then, I'd take a new look at the solutions in the market for performance--there's a lot of novel work being done!
