The future of Used Beverage Carton (UBC) recycling in Kenya is bright! However, we still face challenges, such as the lack of facilities for separating materials like aluminium and paper during the recycling process. As we advocate for better recycling infrastructure, we envision a community where UBCs are transformed into valuable resources. Join us in our #LetaCartonPackUshinde campaign and dispose of your UBCs at any of our select Naivas Supermarket stores. Find the Naivas store near you: 1. Waterfront, Karen Mall 2. Capital Center 3. Project update! ♻ We're piloting a circular economy model focusing on textile waste and second-hand clothes in the Owino market in Uganda. Our mission? Reduce pollution by repurposing textile waste into new products instead of letting it be burned or dumped. So far we have met over 1,000 traders in Owino market, tracked second-hand textiles coming in and out of the market, and met with government stakeholders in the second-hand clothing sector to better understand local policy. Stay tuned for more updates on this project! 🌱

Technological solutions, combined with community involvement and government support, can transform Pakistan's waste crisis into an opportunity for sustainable development.
My trip to Sindh last week was rubbish - literally. Since 2023, #UNOPS Pakistan has been working for improved waste management and supporting plastic recycling. This ranges from infrastructure work with the #Globalfund, to fund management for #pakaltas, #SACEP and the #WorldBank, to procurement and HR support to the #LivingIndus initiative and #UNEP. This trip brought some of the realities home - this picture shows a village of recycling champions. People we intend to work with as we move ahead to support #climateaction. These are the frontline workers in the fight against pollution, and by recognising their value as such we can help to end the challenges they face in carrying out this vital work.

Embracing sustainability isn't just a trend, it's a responsibility and a life style. Let's reduce our carbon footprint, conserve resources, and protect the planet for our upcoming generations. The Earth Overshoot Day for this year is on July 25, 2024— a reminder of the urgency to act. By adopting sustainable practices now, we can ensure a better future with clean air, water, and resources for all. Together, we cans make huge difference! #Sustainability
Our #GEVernova teams in #Pakistan are putting our purpose - The Energy to Change the World - into practice across the communities where we work and live, by committing #sustainable acts of services throughout this #EarthWeek. The team kicked off the week with a “pantry party” in the Lahore office, to drive dialogue around conserving the environment, over coffee and cupcakes. Employees also received insulated, reusable water flasks aimed at reducing single-use plastic in addition to receiving a special plant to grow at home to support air pollution reduction. This energized group of #SustainabilityChampions extended their efforts by getting their hands dirty to clean up the Rose Garden in Bahria Town, a public park for the local community and distributed plants to families visiting the park. #EnergyLooksLikeThis #EarthWeek2024

Logistics That Inspire – and Raise Questions 🚛 It’s remarkable how companies like Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda manage to deliver their products even to the most remote corners of the country. An impressive feat of logistics, especially given the lack of proper infrastructure. But this raises an important question: why don’t those trucks take the empty bottles back with them? In Bugiri, Uganda, a dedicated ranger group from Enjoy Cleaning Up works tirelessly to keep nature clean. They collect all the plastic waste they find in the area – a fantastic step forward. This approach not only prevents the litter from polluting the environment but also avoids the common practice of burning it, which has harmful consequences. But now we face a new challenge: what do we do with the massive pile of collected plastic? Cleaning it up is already a big win, but to make a lasting impact, we need sustainable solutions. Does anyone have ideas or connections that could help give this plastic a new purpose? Together, we can tackle this. Let’s not just ask questions – let’s find answers. 🌱💡 #sustainability #circulareconomy #plasticwaste #uganda #lookingforsolutions #eyripples Uganda Breweries Limited The Coca-Cola Company Unilever

Great work Andy Bownds, thank you for highlighting this pressing issue and for the incredible work Eco Brixs is doing! 🌍 At Green Home Plastic, we share your mission of creating sustainable waste management solutions. In collaboration with Gulu City Council, we are actively working to ensure proper waste collection and recycling systems are in place. By transforming plastic waste into eco-friendly building materials, we’re tackling waste mismanagement while providing affordable and sustainable solutions for our communities. However, to scale our impact and effectively manage waste across the region, government support is crucial. We need policies and funding that prioritize innovative waste management solutions, infrastructure development, and community empowerment. This will help us not only reduce landfill dependency but also create jobs and foster healthier environments. It’s inspiring to see efforts like yours and others advocating for a future where waste becomes a resource, not a burden. Together, with the right support, we can create a cleaner, more sustainable Uganda! 💚♻️ #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #PlasticRecycling #GreenHomePlastic #SustainabilityMatters
**UNSAFE LANDFILL SITES IN UGANDA** Andy Bownds, Eco Brixs’ CEO, visits a new landfill site in Masaka with the city’s Mayor. Together, they are looking at strategies of best how to manage this site due to the lack of waste management systems in Uganda. Sadly, the new landfill site is only a year old but has already spread over a huge area (as far as the eye can see) and has no management or fencing, which means it will likely grow and grow, posing a huge risk to people and the environment. The water caught in the waste is also an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, many which carry malaria, adding to the dangers of mismanaged waste. However, we were pleased to see that the site doesn’t contain any PET plastic (which is recycled by Eco Brixs), which means our plastic recycling and job creation model is working! If you give trash a value, people will ensure its disposed of responsibly and use local waste management systems. Andy and Mayor aim to discuss strategies on how this site can be better managed moving forward, but ideally, Eco Brixs hopes to eventually expand to recycle all types of waste - removing the need for landfills such as these in Uganda all together. #circulareconomy #uganda #sustainability #closedlooprecycling #landfill #wastemanagement #safewastemanagement

Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka, together with The Coca-Cola Foundation, came together with Nestlé Lanka, Unilever Sri Lanka, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government to mark the successful completion of Sri Lanka's first-ever public-private partnership (PPP) for waste management: "Waste to Value." The project’s closing conference was held on December 12th at the Amari Hotel, Colombo. Through this partnership, three Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) were established in Gampaha, Homagama, and Kesbewa. Additionally, a common MRF was built in Wellampitiya to serve the Kotikawatta-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha areas, Kolonnawa Urban Council areas, and several other local authorities. Should producers of hard-to-dispose products pay/compensate those who recycle them after initial end use? Thought of the day and an idea for meaningful CSR project! Over 280 million tires reach their end of useful life around the world annually. These need proper recycling or disposal. Tires are notoriously difficult to recycle due to the fused materials that they comprise (rubber, steel, fiber). => Example - recycling tires in Kenya: In Kenya, artisans make a variety of items using discarded tires. These include sandals that can last for a lot of years in good service. Most of these artisans do not make much from the sales of the products since the market bases they exist in have limited purchasing power. Considering that the artisans provide a big ecosystem service of extending the life of a potential waste product, yet get little out of it, shouldn't they be compensated for this service by the manufacturers? Why compensation: Some tire manufacturers made a profit of over 1.48 Billion USD last year alone, but do they know where their tires will end up to? The tire market size is huge. Since tires are pretty traceable brand wise, could tire companies provide a scheme for paying the deficit that the artisans in Africa will never recover So that they can at least lead a decent life. Or should the companies account for the end of life of their products? This would be a meaningful CSR activity for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Kingsway Tyres Ltd Michelin and others. I would be happy to discuss ideas to bring this to reality in Kenya. What is the role of everyone in this? It would be great to hear thoughts here for learning purposes. The equivalent of these in sanitation would be manual pit emptiers. Video credit: Konnect. #PREF4WASH Sandec-Eawag #Recycling Zoë Lenkiewicz
