Councillors from Winchester City Council joined housing provider Abri Group to view the progress of 109 new affordable homes being built in Curdridge near Botley. Leader of the Council, Cllr Martin Tod, and Cllr Chris Westwood, Cabinet Member for Housing, visited the Sherecroft Meadow development, which will include 42 homes for affordable rent and 67 homes available to buy through shared ownership. Features including solar panels and air source heat pumps are being incorporated into every home to lower their carbon footprint and reduce energy bills. Future households will also benefit from water saving devices designed to reduce water consumption to a maximum 100 litres of water per person per day. Stephen Lodge, Executive Director Development and Strategic Asset Management at Abri says: "By using our inhouse construction team to build these homes we have full control of the quality, and the incorporation of sustainable features will keep utility bills low for residents. https://lnkd.in/eBrzjXyQ #newhomes #affordablehomes #construction #sustainability #energyefficiency #watersaving #housingassociation #council #affordablerent #sharedownership #solarpv #airsourceheatpumps

To build more housing fast and with mixed-use developments, let's bulldoze a whole inner city suburb and start again. Don't worry about existing infrastructures that are already falling apart and not being able to support intensification. A smart way of doing these new mixed-use housing estate is to look at how Singapore does them. Theirs are always within walking distance to a public transport transit. In addition to yiur normal roads, drains and power, PT should be part of these greenfield developments. Each is essentially self contained with shops and cafes. Why are we so slow to learn and adapt from others? And BTW, why do people post and limit comments to connections only?

It is great to hear Minister of Housing Chris Bishop talking about the importance of mixed-use residential development (ie having shops, cafes and offices mixed in with housing, creating vibrant, liveable communities) and also the need to offer a range of housing types to cater for a range of needs and budgets. https://lnkd.in/gCf6WHHQ But the more we 'push out at the urban fringes' and open up more greenfield, the more it's going to cost us to build and service the infrastructure required. This has been been the finding of report after report internationally (eg see Urban3, Infrastructure Victoria's work), and now of a Greater Wellington Regional Council-commissioned report of infrastructure costs of different urban form in the Wellington Region by Sense Partners: "Building more compact, mixed-use urban communities will help reduce infrastructure costs, and will make it cheaper and easier to reduce transport emissions, cleaning our air and making our towns and cities healthier" - Thomas Nash https://lnkd.in/gA4dfsQW Find the report here: https://lnkd.in/ggA324E8 #housing #urbandesign #transportemissions #infrastructure #greenfield

This year, World Town Planning Day is spotlighting the crucial role of planning and planners in delivering housing that meets the needs of our communities, and in helping to create equitable, inclusive, and sustainable solutions for all. At Rural Solutions, we’re dedicated to working with rural landowners and developers to create housing that supports vibrant, sustainable rural communities. Our work covers the whole of the country. It involves engaging in all stages of the planning process. Promoting land for allocation as housing sites in local plans on behalf of rural landowners. Influencing local policy to recognise the role of rural estates and their unique ability to deliver managed change in rural communities in which they already often provide quality and affordable homes. Working with developers and design teams to deliver planning applications from single country houses, to rural conversion schemes, and village extensions. It can be hugely rewarding working on projects which you can see can contribute to the future sustainability and vitality of rural communities. The demand for high-quality, affordable homes is at an all-time high. It’s therefore not surprising that in initial speeches by our new Government, there was an immediate focus on housing, with a promise to unlock planning decisions and build 1.5 million new homes by 2029. At Morris & Spottiswood, we’re well-experienced in producing energy-efficient, sustainable affordable homes – both new build and retrofit. Interesting to hear Rachel Reeves talking about the Labour party approach to solving the crisis in Housing in the UK. Clearly there will be tension between the demand for more homes, economic growth and issues such as greenfield sites, the provision of services along with solutions to the real crisis in rentals and its effect on homelessness. Building on grey belt is one solution but it can lead to infill and then further demand upon Greenfield sites. Niche brownfield sites, retro fitting and the bringing back into use of empty homes and High Streets must surely be the starting point. Planning has been a real problem to us in the development of the Stourbridge PowerHaus and any streamlining of the process and a more enabling approach is welcomed. Here at wMUCh I have already made progress on that issue working with Birmingham City Council affordable housing team as part of a new CLH policy. Working as wMUCH my aim is to extend that approach to all local authorities in the region. Here in Stourbridge as Stourbridge CLT we have taken a balanced approach in supporting campaigns to protect valuable green space such as the Corbett Meadow whilst at the same time moving forward with development of affordable homes for rent on a brownfield site on Enville Street. Engagement with communities and local authorities and sensible balanced conversations around the demands for growth in the economy alongside the demands for sustainable communities and the issue of climate change will provide the answer, however everyone needs to take a pragmatic approach and this will of course involve compromise on all sides. Recent studies and our own work point to the fact that investment of £1 in Community Led Housing leads to a return of £3 to local economies . There is billions locked up in the development and engagement of local communities. The unlocking of this potential will not only create growth but address the current imbalance in our democracy which is a serious challenge. We can have our cake and eat it. https://lnkd.in/eYpa-e3v. #labourparty #RichardParkermayor #community

RE-THINKING AFRICAN HOUSING part 1 This week I want to explore a controversial topic of the housing crisis that seems to permeate across our continent. The controversy is not due to the actual subject matter, we can all agree that every family should have dignified shelter with energy, water and sanitation. The controversy stems from the inability to solve this ongoing problem and I am sure there will be many opinions on the solutions and on what the obstacles are that are standing in our way. I want to take a more optimistic approach this week and hopefully open a dialogue that can share some creative ideas such as the image below. These mini-homes (although not destined for social housing) do ask an interesting question: "Can we build affordable homes in a factory and deliver them to the site when complete?" I am being overly simplistic for obvious reasons but it stirs the right spirit of critical thinking. Full credit to Con-imex Ltd for these fantastic builds. #framecad #construction #modular #affordablehomes

🌟 Successful Presentation at Hutton Cranswick Parish Council 🌟 Last night, we had the pleasure of presenting our proposed Passive House Development for Hutton Cranswick to the Parish Council. The session was incredibly engaging, with thoughtful questions and constructive feedback from the attendees. Key topics of discussion included: ▪️ Affordable Housing: Addressing the need for accessible, sustainable homes for all. ▪️ Housing for New Families: The potential to meet the housing needs of young families in the area. ▪️ Sustainable Design: Highlighting the energy efficiency and low-carbon benefits of Passive House standards. ▪️ Pricing: Ensuring the final properties are competitively priced for the market. 🏡 One important issue raised was the plot’s location outside the current development boundaries for Hutton Cranswick - The proposed development, while outside the current village development boundary, aligns with the Government's commitment to addressing the national housing shortage by delivering high-quality, sustainable homes. With a focus on energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, this project supports the push for more housing in rural areas, ensuring communities like Hutton Cranswick can grow sustainably and attract new families. We also discussed accessibility to the village, and we’re pleased to share our commitment to working with the Highways Agency to create a new footpath and cycle path connecting the development to the village, just 130 meters away. The next steps? We’re moving forward with the pre-planning application and look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to bring this exciting project to life. A big thank you to the Parish Council and everyone who attended for their time, insights, and support. This project represents a step forward in sustainable, community-focused housing, and we’re excited for what’s to come! #SustainableLiving #PassiveHouse #HuttonCranswick #GrayArchitecturalDesign #CommunityEngagement #GreenBuilding #FutureHomes #EastYorkshire
