On Saturday, September 21st, a Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard Dash 8 maritime surveillance aircraft played a crucial role in detecting suspicious activity near the ABC Islands. Equipped with AIMS-ISR mission software, the Dash 8 quickly identified a go-fast boat, leading to the swift deployment of the Holand-class navy ship. Within hours, two go-fasts were intercepted, resulting in the arrest of seven suspects and the seizure of approximately 1790 kilos of cocaine. This report, titled "#PLAN #Anti-#Submarine #Warfare (#ASW) Aircraft," provides comprehensive insights into the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN) Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities, a topic rarely addressed. Serving as a valuable resource, it offers detailed information on the PLAN's rotary-wing and fixed-wing ASW platforms, capabilities, and weapons systems, drawing from PLAN-affiliated researchers. Delving into basic ASW search concepts, the report includes tactical drawings used in simulations. Additionally, it sheds light on the coordination of ASW efforts between maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, shore-based assets, and surface formations, as well as tactical handoffs between them. Authors Eli Turk and Daniel Salsbury are commended for their significant contribution to this limited body of literature. The PLA Navy recognizes the significance of a robust anti-submarine warfare (ASW) system in countering adversaries seeking undersea asymmetric advantages, with its aviation component being integral to this system. This report discusses the PLAN's efforts to enhance its airborne ASW platforms and equipment, alongside descriptions of how PLAN-affiliated sources discuss the utilization of these assets.

Time for another Maritime Minute, brought to you by Maritime Support Concepts. Earlier this month at the Defense News Conference, there was a naval expert panel hosted by the Military Times discussing the need for rapid innovation and adoption of new technologies to effectively address emergent threats to US National Security and Defense. During this illuminating discussion, Michael Stewart of the US Navy's Disruptive Capabilities Office (DCO) highlighted some key points pertaining to innovation in the hashtag #maritime domain: - "Go fast, because speed matters." - "Don't get caught flat-footed" - "Know what disruptive technology is, how to defend against it" - Know how to adopt and deploy disruptive technologies in order "to complement the existing fleet" Panelists further discussed the evolution of modern warfare, characterized by the now rapid adoption and deployment of drone technologies in the battlespace, as witnessed in the Ukraine conflict. As has been the case throughout US history, these types of emerging threats and measures to effectively counteract them in kind highlight the ongoing importance of public/private sector defense partnerships, whereby US Department of Defense agencies are able to incorporate the speed, agility, creativity, and innovation of the private sector into overall defense capabilities. https://lnkd.in/gSyYFwgu Date is September 24th, 2024, and this has been your Maritime Minute.

The AT-802U / OA-1K eliminates the biggest barrier to entry in the air domain - airfordability (misspelling intended). Air Tractor airframes, in the agriculture and firebomber configuration, are already operating around the globe on a for profit basis -that includes 110 in Africa. The same nations that struggle to find airfordable aircraft are also infrastructure limited – see runways which can dwarf the cost of aircraft. The AT-802U / OA-1K gets non G20 nations into the air domain where they’ll have exclusive use and an asymmetric advantage over terrorists and criminals.
U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) is working to identify new requirements for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) beyond its Beechcraft MC-12 and Pilatus U-28 fleets, as it prioritizes the fielding of the OA-1K Sky Warden armed overwatch aircraft. https://lnkd.in/e-Ej2sad
